The 13th Warrior AKA Eaters Of The Dead

In AD 922, Arab courtier Ahmad Ibn Fadlan accompanies a party of Vikings to the barbaric North. Ibn Fadlan is appalled by the Vikings customs - their wanton sexuality, their disregard for cleanliness, their cold-blooded human sacrifices. And then he learns the horrifying truth: he has been enlisted to combat a terror that slaughters the Vikings and devours their flesh.

November 10th 1998: A new image from the much-delayed film "The 13th Warrior" starring Antonio Banderas. It looks like some sort of artwork for the film, with thanks to 'Brandon' for the pic.

October 14th 1998: Walt Disney foreign arm Buena Vista Film Sales will handle international distribution of the long-delayed Touchstone release "The Thirteenth Warrior,'' starring Antonio Banderas. The John McTiernan-helmed picture, based on the novel "Eaters of the Dead'' by Michael Crichton, finished shooting in November 1997 but is not due for release in the U.S. until summer 1999. September 2nd 1998: The final set date for this upcoming Viking film is now supposedly sometime in the 1st quarter of 1999. It was delayed because they still had shots to do and because Antonio Banderas hurt his back. Also, be sure to check out the latest test screening reviews over at Ain't It Cool News. August 8th 1998: The Official site changed the release date to "Coming 1999" and removed the "Website Coming Soon" image..

August 5th 1998: At the left is a great shot of Antonio Banderas ("The Mask of Zorro") onboard one of the Viking ships in the upcoming movie, "The 13th Warrior." A big thanks to "Susan" for the image and "Debel" for the alert!

July 30th 1998: Digital effects house Cinesite has landed the visual f/x contract for Buena Vista's "The 13th Warrior." The CG creation of a Viking ship careening down 300-foot waves was the most challenging shot for Jerry Pooler, Cinesite's visual effects supervisor on the film. Also mentioned was the Thanksgiving release date. If this is true, there won't be much time to promote this film. Thanks to 'Debel' for the info!

July 27th 1998: Antonio Banderas and Dennis Storhøi recently finished shooting this film, which has become one of Disney's most expensive projects ever. July 8th 1998: The Internet Movie Database reports that this upcoming Viking flick starring Antonio Banderas and Dennis Storhøi has been pushed forward to a January '99 release date. This is most likely to avoid the overcrowded Thanksgiving period.

June 14th 1998: An anonymous source who worked on this upcoming project sent in some interesting tidbits, which clears up some details about the characters names. A huge thanks to "Anonymous."

* Omar Sharif's character is not called "Buliwyf", as the Internet Movie Database states. Buliwyf is played by a less-known actor.
* Diane (Venora)'s character is called Queen Weilew (possibly misspelled). It's pronounced Weigh-loo.
* Another producer is Ned Dowd ("While You Were Sleeping.")
* The monsters they fight in the film are called Wendols (though there supposedly was talk about changing this name during shooting.)
* The plot is very much the same as the book, but there is obviously far more dialogue in the movie version.
* Asbjorn "Bear" Riis plays Halga in the movie, and John DeSantis plays Ragnar.
* Antonio's character is the 13th of 13 warriors, the other twelve being Vikings.

May 12th 1998: Rumours indicate that Graeme Revell ("The Saint") is being replaced by Jerry Goldsmith ("Air Force One") to handle the musical score for this big budget Viking movie. A big thanks to 'Debel' for this information.

May 1st 1998: Dennis Storhøi recently reported lots of interesting news on this upcoming Viking-project to a Norwegian newspaper, such as:

* The budget is rising to a "Titanic-level", Storhøi said.
* The film's premiere has been pushed to Oct - Nov 1998.
* The original $60 mill budget has supposedly grown to about $150(!) million.
* There has already been lots of re-shots, and they are currently re-shooting even more scenes in L.A.
* Maria Bonnevie falls in love with Banderas' character in the film.

April 2nd 1998: This is probably the last time you'll see the title "Eaters Of The Dead" anywhere on my site. The new title is Officially "The 13th Warrior." Personally, I like the old "Eaters Of The Dead" title better, but I'll probably get used to it :-) Thanks to 'Debel' for the alert!

March 15th 1998: Cinescape Online reports that EOTD will be given a new title, "The Thirteenth Warrior." That means we have two possible new titles for Eaters of the Dead: "Battleground" and "The Thirteenth Warrior," I wonder which one they'll choose :-)

March 10th 1998: The new release date for "Eaters of the Dead" is now June 12th 1998.

February 25th 1998: Coming Attractions reports that the title may be changed to "Battleground", and that the movie will possibly be pushed back to August. Also, still no sign of Arnold Schwarzenegger in any of the screenings, I guess that means the cameo isn't in there...

February 5th 1998: The Offical Teaser-trailer is now available for downloading! Also, the Official Site just opened. Check it out!

January 23rd 1998: Dennis Storhøi ("Herger") became friends for life with both Antonio Banderas and Omar Sharif while they were shooting the movie. Also, two new cast-members includes Dennis Storhøi's wife Mona Keilhau and actress Turid Balke. Mona Keilhau plays the mistress to one of the Kings in the film, who is eventually (SPOILER) burned on a fire. (/SPOILER)

January 20th 1998: Looks like Graeme Revell ("The Saint," "Spawn") will be doing the musical score for this upcoming thriller starring Antonio Banderas and Dennis Storhøi. Also, a teaser trailer for EOTD has been spotted in front of the movie "Fallen."

January 4th 1998: I found a page right here that has lots of picture from the set of Eaters Of The Dead, when it was shooting in Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada. Enjoy!

December 31st 1997: Norwegian actor Dennis Storhøi had to have three weeks of hard battle training before he started shooting the movie Eaters Of The Dead. He had to learn the ways of the Vikings, who kills without showing any mercy and takes the women they want. "I also had to learn how to ride a horse and speak Viking-ish", Storhøi says. Dennis Storhøi plays the wise(?) Viking Herger, and Antonio Banderas plays Ibn, a traveler who unintentionally finds himself in the middle of a barbaric Viking environment. After a while, the two guys become partners and have to defend themselves against a very dangerous and threatening enemy, the so-called "Bearpeople". "There is going to be lots of brutality in the movies, but it was a very tough time", Dennis says.

December 31st 1997: Arnold Schwarzenegger's cameo may be as a king who tempts the flesh-eaters to attack a group of villagers.

December 30th 1997: Expect to see much blood and gore in this one. Decapitation, body cleavings, and disembowelings are just some of the bloodshed to splatter across the screen in this true-to-life viking flick.
