I have seen TM:TSOJOA a couple of days ago. Then I saw the scoop in your news update and thought I'd like to add to it. The special effects are used when having wide shots of the english and their defense posts. It does look real though I saw it was CGI. But a good job it was indeed. Another thing about the movie are the battles between the french army the english army. They are SPR-like and are very violent, though I enjoyed watching them since they looked so very real.

August 19th 1999: The Unofficial Joan of Arc Site sent along some info about the film's visual effects;

Joan of Arc Special Effects - Not much has been said about special effects for this film but a French Effects company called Duboi has had their hand in part of the post production for JOA. It is not known at this time what they did for the film but I am sure it will be amazing. These were the same guys who did SFX for the film Alien IV!

April 30th 1999: With thanks to the Unofficial Joan Of Arc Page, some news related to this project:

UKRANIAN ubermodel Milla Jovovich and French director Luc Besson have separated after less than two years of marriage. And, according to the Orange County Register, the pair, who met on the set of The Fifth Element, plan to divorce soon. A spokesman for the couple attributes the break-down in communication to their cross-continental lifestyle and insists that, despite the split, the two will remain "close friends and collaborators". Let's hope so: Milla, who made her first cover at the tender age of 11 when Richard Avedon shot her for Mademoiselle, is to play the title role in Besson's latest film, Joan of Arc. Things could get heated.

November 3rd 1998: Dustin Hoffman ("Wag the Dog") has quietly taken a starring role in Sony's big-budget "Joan of Arc," directed by Luc Besson and starring Milla Jovovich in the title role. Hoffman begins shooting his role Monday, about five months after the mid-June kickoff of the picture. As usual on Luc Besson's movies, things are being kept very secret, so it's unknown which role he'll be playing .. for now.

June 30th 1998: John Malkovich ("Con Air") has joined the cast of "Joan of Arc," the big-budget period piece directed by Luc Besson. It stars Milla Jovovich as the French heroine who led forces against the English and was burned at the stake.

January 9th 1998: Luc Besson has committed to direct girlfriend Milla Jovovich in the title role of "Joan of Arc," an epic about the 15th-century French martyr who led an uprising against the British and was burned at the stake. Besson, who last directed Jovovich in "The Fifth Element," will begin production of the film in France and around Europe in June.
