Movie News & Rumours:

August 4th 2000: Keanu Reeves recently talked to USA Today and confirmed that the "Matrix II" script is finished and that he's read it: "It's fantastic. It has even more ambitions than the first one. My character is more developed." Regarding the coming film's stunts, Reeves reveals, "There are a lot of physical demands in it. It's more sophisticated in the action sequences and fight sequences." The actor adds that once again, Andy and Larry Wachowski are likely to be pushing the visual envelope with the film as well as looking at the potential use of digital cameras for the shoot. Reeves says, "[They're] trying to achieve certain camera perspectives." The paper reports that Reeves will check in with the production in November for training purposes. Production of the back-to-back Matrix 2 and 3 shoot will start in late March or early April. Thanks to Cinescape Online.

March 13th 2000: Producer Joel Silver recently spoke with JAM! Showbiz about the "Matrix" sequels: "We are going to do Matrix 2 and Matrix 3 simultaneously. We are essentially going to make one giant movie that will be cut in half to make two smaller movies," says Silver. "We should begin shooting in the spring of 2001 in Australia and we'll be bringing all of the main characters who survived the first one back for the sequels." Silver admits Joe Pantoliano has been putting word out on Matrix websites that his character did not really die in the first movie. "Joe is convinced he didn't really die, but in the movie I saw he certainly did. He'll have to talk to the writers to see if they can work something out."

October 30th 1999: In an interview with Sci-Fi Weekly, producer Joel Silver was asked some questions about the 'Matrix' sequels:

Sci-Fi Weekly: Let's talk about The Matrix II. Do you have any news you can tell us?

Silver: We're going to make Matrix II and III together. It's a unique situation where...the story does continue. Other sequels I've been involved in, we've had to sit down and figure out a story. But in this movie, the story is continuing. Essentially, the boys [writers/directors the Wachowski brothers] intended to make Matrix because they wanted to find a way to make a superhero movie today where the audience would accept superheroes in a way that wouldn't feel to them like Saturday morning television. And they made the first movie to set up that world. In the sequels, you're going to see that Neo has superhuman powers, and they can really do what they've always wanted to do.

Sci-Fi Weekly: Are we going to see Zion, the last human habitation, which was only talked about in the first film?

Silver: Oh, you're going to see Zion.

Sci-Fi Weekly: Any other plot elements you can tell us?

Silver: I can't really tell you that much. But it's going to be incredible.

Sci-Fi Weekly: Does Carrie-Anne Moss, who played Trinity, return?

Silver: Yes, Carrie-Anne will be in it. Her deal's not done yet. But Keanu's [Reeves, who plays Neo] deal is done, and Laurence Fishburne [Morpheus]. And it's all coming together.

August 25th 1999: Keanu Reeves is close to a deal with Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures for two "Matrix" sequels, which will pay him a combined $30 million against 15% of the gross. The actor and writer-directors Larry and Andy Wachowski are set to begin a 250-day production schedule in fall 2000 that will encompass two back-to-back sequels. The Wachowskis recently completed a deal to continue the sci-fi series they’d always envisioned as a three-pic storyline. The Wachowskis originally figured to film a prequel followed by a sequel, but the plan now is to do two sequels instead. Laurence Fishburne and Carrie-Anne Moss will most like reprise their roles.

April 18th 1999: Not much news this weekend, but for those who are interested in reading the script for "The Matrix," it's now available online with thanks to The Matrix Site.

[Script] Matrix - Written by Larry and Andy Wachowski

April 5th 1999: 'Matrix' earned about $27.6 million for the Friday-to-Sunday period, according to studio estimates, breaking several records in the process. Since its Wednesday release, designed to capitalize on the Easter holiday, the Warner Bros. film has pulled in about $37.2 million.

April 3rd 1999: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros.' "The Matrix" grossed a dazzling $4.8 million in North American theaters Wednesday, the biggest pre-Easter opening ever. That's nearly double the previous record of $2.9 million set by Paramount's "Indecent Proposal" on April 7, 1993. The impressive opening bodes well for the film's weekend prospects as "Matrix" has been tracking strongly in prerelease polls. The sci-fi actioner starring Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne opened in 2,704 theaters Wednesday and adds 145 on Friday. The film was helmed by Larry and Andy Wachowski.
