M:I-2 - Film Review (Mixed/Positive) May 3rd 2000: According to Mr. Showbiz, the last-minute reworking on the movie was all about getting out of an R rating and going into theaters as a PG-13. The MPAA says the film has received a PG-13 rating for "intense sequences of violent action and some sensuality." It was supposedly the sequences of violent action, and not the sensuality, that slowed the process. The film received the rating after several submissions, and after substantial trimming. That couldn't have been accomplished without significantly altering the movie that the director delivered, which several sources says was pure Woo - lots of complex action, beautifully shot, and, one source said, "far too rough to ever get the PG-13." July 21st 1999: Paramount is postponing the release of "Mission: Impossible 2" from its original December 17th date to Wednesday May 24th, 2000. The April production start was delayed for several weeks due to script and budgetary issues. Cruise also took some time off shooting the sequel to do publicity for Warner Bros.' "Eyes Wide Shut." May 19th 1999: U.S. cinematographer Jeffrey Kimball ("Top Gun") has signed on to the Tom Cruise starrer "Mission: Impossible 2" following the departure of Australian director of photography Andrew Lesnie. Lesnie left the Sydney set late last week and could not be reached for comment, but a spokeswoman for the production cited "stylistic differences" with director John Woo. "It was all very amicable and no reflection whatsoever on Andrew. John has a certain way of shooting and a certain speed, and Andrew had his way, and happily they agreed to part company," she said. A Los Angeles-based spokesman for Paramount Pictures, which will release the film worldwide, also confirmed the change, according to THR. April 22nd 1999: Anthony Hopkins will take on the role of Tom Cruise's boss in the film. Ian McKellan had previously been in talks to take the role but that fell through, THR reports. April 22nd 1999: Brendan Gleeson ("The General") has been cast in "Mission: Impossible 2" opposite Tom Cruise. In the John Woo-directed film, Gleeson will play an upper-class British industrialist a la Rupert Murdoch who is charming on the surface but the opposite underneath. The sequel to 1996's "Mission: Impossible," shooting in Australia, is produced by Cruise and Paula Wagner's C/W Prods. for Paramount Pictures. Ian McKellen, Ving Rhames, Steve Zahn, Thandie Newton and Dougray Scott also star in the project, THR reports. April 19th 1999: With thanks to Trent, here's some new info on this project's first day of shooting: "Filming for MI2 HAS begun in Sydney. The first day of shooting involved filming a scene at Royal Randwick Racecourse in the Eastern suburbs. It has been confirmed that the racecourse will be the "drop-off point" for the instructions for the new mission. I'm unsure whether any of the major stars were present, or whether this was merely a second unit grabbing some crowd scenes." March 10th 1999: Variety reports that the Tom Cruise film "Mission: Impossible 2" has been delayed. Members of the crew have been sent home and the March 20 start date delayed for an unspecified number of weeks. Paramount confirmed that the film's original start date has been pushed back a few weeks. The studio would not discuss the reasons for the delay, but insisted that the film was moving ahead as planned and is expected to begin production at the end of March or beginning of April. "From what we understand, the film's script is being reworked, and the production side has therefore gotten ahead of the script,'' said a spokeswoman for New South Wales state premier Bob Carr. January 26th 1999: Ian McKellen ("Apt Pupil," "Gods and Monsters") is rumored to play the film's main villain. October 22nd 1998: Steve Zahn ("Out of Sight") will star opposite Tom Cruise in "Mission: Impossible 2." The sequel to 1996's "Mission: Impossible" will be directed by John Woo, produced by C/W Prods. for Paramount and is slated for an early 1999 start. "Mission" also stars Thandie Newton, Ving Rhames, Luther Stickell and Dougray Scott. September 25th 1998: Thandie Newton ("Gridlock'd") is close to a deal for the female lead in the "Mission: Impossible" sequel. Newton will join Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames and Dougray Scott in the John Woo-directed Paramount action movie, which is slated to start shooting in Australia in mid-January. August 4th 1998: Dougray Scott ("Ever After: A Cinderella Story") is in talks to play a more sinister role in the sequel to "Mission: Impossible." Scott has been tapped to play a villain in the John Woo-directed follow-up to the successful 1996 movie. February 3rd 1998: Rumors indicate that Oliver Stone has left the project. Tom Cruise has been tied up in Eyes Wide Shut for fourteen months, and apparently Stone doesn't want to be forced to wait because of Kubrick.. The recent buzz is that John Woo may be the next choice to direct Mission Impossible 2! RELEASE
