Its creators plan to meet Monday with Artisan for preliminary discussions about a follow-up that has been targeted for release next summer. Writer-directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez have outlined at least four potential story lines, including two prequels. One would explore the ancient Blair Witch legend, and another would recount the legend of a 1940s serial killer who murdered seven children (and is mentioned in the original film), THR reports. Blair Witch Project - A Film Review (Positive) June 8th 1999: Psychological thriller "The Blair Witch Project" kicks off the eighth annual Florida Film Festival on Friday night. Produced by Haxan Films, the movie follows three student filmmakers (Heather Donahue, Michael Williams and Joshua Leonard) who mysteriously disappear during the filming of a documentary about the mythical Blair witch. Although the three never emerge from the forest, terrifying footage of their experiences is discovered a year later. The film, making its East Coast premiere, debuted at the Sundance Film Festival this year and was acquired for distribution by Artisan Entertainment. The Florida Film Festival screening will be the film's only domestic festival screening outside of Sundance before its national release in July, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

January 22nd 1999: The Sundance festivals first pickup took place in the wee hours Sunday when Artisan Entertainment scooped up worldwide rights to the horror mockumentary The Blair Witch Project, co-written and co-directed by Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick. While the company would say only that the purchase was made for a seven-figure sum, informed sources put the number between $1 million and $1.5 million. While at least two other buyers - Fine Line Features and Trimark Pictures - made strong plays for Witch, Artisan jumped on its broomstick and closed the deal early Sunday morning after the chillers packed midnight screening, according to Variety.
