April 8th 2000: Angelina Jolie has officially signed on to play Lara Croft in the film version of the hit video game, "Tomb Raider." Variety reports that Eidos Plc (EID.L) said production of the hotly awaited Paramount Pictures film would begin this summer with Simon West ("The General's Daughter") directing. In "Raider" Jolie will play Croft, a publishing magnate who battles danger as she travels to exotic locations to uncover and preserve ancient artifacts, like a female Indiana Jones. March 28th 2000: Another review of Steven E. De Souza's (rejected) 'Tomb Raider' script, with thanks to IGN FilmForce. Tomb Raider - Script Review (Negative) March 3rd 2000: Angelina Jolie ("Girl, Interrupted") is in final talks to play Lara Croft in "Tomb Raider," a live-action feature based on the hugely popular video game. Variety reports that the Paramount Pictures project is set to begin production this summer, with Simon West ("The General's Daughter") directing. March 2nd 2000: Director Simon West ("Con Air") recently talked to EW about the "Tomb Raider" project: "No movie made from a videogame has ever worked." That said, West is hoping his summer 2001 adaptation of the phenomenon will be to Paramount what "Batman" was to Warner Bros.: a big-budget, billion-dollar box office franchise. West replaced Stephen Herek ("Mr. Holland's Opus") after Herek jumped to the Mark Wahlberg starrer "Metal God," and rehired "Raider"'s first set of writers, Patrick Massett and John Zinman. "I read all the back drafts and the one I liked best was theirs," says West. "It's the classic Hollywood development system where you go back to where you started." Now, West is searching for an unknown actress who can start playing the "James Bond of archaeology" this June. "We don't want to ram a Hollywood star into this thing, because Lara is visually [known]," West says. "To some, she's the perfect woman, though others would say she's a total male fabrication of what a woman should be." One tip for aspiring talent: Leave the Wonderbra at home. West says that when it comes to "his Tomb"-raiding type, he's more of an "Alien''-bashing Sigourney Weaver than a "Barb Wire"d Pamela Lee kind of guy. December 21st 1999: Paramount Pictures is in advanced negotiations to enlist Simon West ("Con Air," "The Generals Daughter") to direct "Tomb Raider." Variety reports that the screenplay - which bears similarities to Raiders of the Lost Ark - remains the stumbling block. The picture remains on Paramounts fast track. Producers Lawrence Gordon and Lloyd Levin are still on board and will work with West and scribes Michael Werb and Michael Colleary ("Face/Off") on the rewrite. Earlier in the year the producers were developing the script with helmer Stephen Herek (Mr. Hollands Opus) and scribes Patrick Massett and John Zinman. When Herek signed on to Warner Bros. Metal God, the producers needed to find a new director. August 8th 1999: CA has added a positive review of Steven E. De Souza's 'Tomb Raider' script draft: Tomb Raider - Script Review (Positive) April 13th 1999: Variety reports that a live-action picture based on the popular Croft video game, is said to be on the fast track at Paramount Pictures. Director Stephen Herek ("Holy Man") is close to a deal to develop the project, which the studio hopes to turn into an event film for release in summer 2000. Several scribes took a shot at adapting the video game - at one point two writers were working independently on different versions. But it wasn't until screenwriter Steven de Souza submitted his draft that Paramount deemed the project ready for a director to come on board, according to Paramount MPG president John Goldwyn.
