Mission to Mars - Script Review (Positive)

June 1st 1999: Monica Potter ("Patch Adams") has dropped out of Disney's "Mission to Mars" and joined Universal's "Head Over Heels." With Potter aborting "Mission to Mars," Disney's bid to beat Warner Bros. to the first Mars project has suffered a setback. March 28th 1999: Tim Robbins is in negotiations to star in Walt Disney Studios' highly anticipated science-fiction thriller "Mission to Mars." He would join a cast that includes Gary Sinise and Don Cheadle. Robbins would play Woody, a gung-ho astronaut who, along with his astronaut wife, leads a rescue mission into outer space after a mission to Mars meets disaster. Arriving at the distant planet, the mission discovers a survivor and learns what happened to the ill-fated mission. Ted Tally is rewriting the script with director Brian De Palma rolling cameras in July. Disney will probably release "Mission to Mars" in May or June 2000 under its Hollywood Pictures label.

February 4th 1999: Coming Attractions added some info about the development of the 'Mission to Mars' script:

Thanks to 'Marx #4', we found out how the project originated. According to our scooper the film's producer came up with the idea with David Goyer (Blade). When Goyer couldn't write the script because of prior commitments the job got handed to Jim and John Thomas (Predator) Then Graham Yost (Broken Arrow) did a rewrite (because of his work on From the Earth to the Moon, we're told). And then finally, screenwriter Ted Tally (The Silence of the Lambs) was brought on for a polish. Presto! -- you've got a script!

February 2nd 1999: Gary Sinise ("Snake Eyes") has signed to star in "Mission to Mars," a sci-fi film being eyed as Disney's big release for summer 2000. Brian De Palma has been rumored to direct this film.

January 12th 1999: Director Gore Verbinski ("Mouse Hunt") has dropped out of the big-budget Walt Disney Co. dramatic adventure "Mission to Mars" project over creative and budgetary differences. Verbinski and "Mission to Mars" producer Tom Jacobson ("Mighty Joe Young") agreed to part ways Friday. The film, supervised by Walt Disney Motion Picture Group president David Vogel, had been in preproduction for six to eight weeks and was set for a May or June start.

October 3rd 1998: Gore Verbinski ("Mouse Hunt") has signed to navigate "Mission to Mars" for Disney. The dramatic adventure revolves around the first manned mission to Mars. When something goes wrong, a second team is dispatched to rescue the first. The project is on the fast track at Disney as a major "tentpole'' production.
