"A source has informed us that the final FX schedule for AI is now running about 3 weeks behind schedule. They will be working double shifts this week to try to catch up, but failing this, Amblin may be forced to move the date of release since Mr. Spielberg rightfully will release no film before its time. Thanks to Cinescape Online.

May 29th 2000: Ten year old actor Jake Thomas ("The Cell") has landed a starring role in "A.I.," according to his official web site. Thomas read for the role early in April, and was asked to come by and meet with Steven Spielberg on April 24th at Warner Brothers. May 22nd 2000: Empire Online spoke with Jude Law at the London premiere of "Nora." Law had flown back for the party from Cuba, where he’s currently filming "A.I," with Stephen Spielberg. "He has a tremendous visual imagination," Law said of Spielberg, "he'll do a fantastic job of this film."

April 18th 2000: Australian actress Frances O'Connor will indeed join Jude Law and Haley Joel Osment in Steven Spielberg's "A.I.," which is slated to start shooting July 10 for a summer 2001 release. April 4th 2000: According to Variety, Steven Spielberg is eyeing "Mansfield Park" star Frances O’Connor to play the female lead in "A.I."

April 1st 2000: Haley Joel Osment will supposedly be paid $2 million to star in the Steven Spielberg-helmed "A.I." for Warner Bros./DreamWorks, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

March 28th 2000: Oscar nominees Jude Law is set and Haley Joel Osment is getting closer to a deal to star in Steven Spielberg's "A.I." Osment's commitment to the project comes after he entered into talks about the project earlier this month. He has even tried to help Spielberg cast the role of his mother, THR states, and he informally asked Julianne Moore during the Oscar nominee luncheon if she wanted to play his Mom. Moore cannot do it because of prior commitments (including "Hannibal").

March 16th 2000: Jude Law ("The Talented Mr. Ripley") is in negotiations to topline Steven Spielberg's apocalyptic project "A.I." Haley Joel Osment ("The Sixth Sense") is also understood to be in talks to join the project. According to THR, Spielberg, who also wrote the "A.I." screenplay, plans to start production July 10th. The project, set in the future, tells the story of robots that possess artificial intelligence and live in a time when polar icecaps have melted, putting New York's skyscrapers under water.

March 15th 2000: Steven Spielberg's next movie will indeed be the science fiction epic "A.I." Spielberg recently said that Stanley Kubrick had been developing it for nearly two decades before his death. The two men were close friends and Spielberg has described Kubrick as a valued mentor. "Stanley had a vision for this project that was evolving over 18 years," Spielberg said. "I am intent on bringing to the screen as much of that vision as possible along with elements of my own." Variety reports that work on "A.I." begins in July for a summer release in 2001.

March 13th 2000: Variety's Army Archerd recently reported that although Steven Spielberg says no final decision has been made on his next pic, it looks more and more like it'll be “A.I” ("Artificial Intelligence"). Those who were attached to ready “Minority Report” are now freed and other regulars of the Spielberg team have been asked to be ready for a July 15th start of “A.I.” for DreamWorks/WB. In related news, Tom Cruise announced on Entertainment Tonight that "Minority Report" won't start filming until April or May 2000.. Thanks to Jawad.

February 22nd 2000: It seems likely that while Steven Spielberg shoots "Minority Report," Warner Bros. could simultaneously prepare "A.I," based on an outline by Stanley Kubrick. Spielberg was passionate enough about "A.I." to make it the first film he's scripted himself since "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." While it's unclear whether another scribe will be brought in to finish, WB is already examining logistics, and Spielberg has been looking for the next Haley Joel Osment to play the lead kid, Variety states.

December 7th 1999: Steven Spielberg is expected to shortly decide whether to next direct “Minority Report” or “A.I.,” the project Spielberg himself is scripting based on a treatment by Stanley Kubrick. Also, the Steve Kloves script for “Harry Potter” is due this week, which Spielberg has had his eye on. Variety reports that he could do two pics back-to-back, but he likely won’t decide which comes first until later this month.

November 17th 1999: Variety reports that Steven Spielberg has taken Stanley Kubrick's 80-page "A.I." treatment, and is writing the script himself. Spielberg is still awaiting Scott Frank's draft of “Minority Report.” If that script is not approved, he might go with A.I. instead.

September 6th 1999: The Sunday Times and Variety reports that Steven Spielberg might take over direction of Stanley Kubrick's last unfinished film project. He and Spielberg had been close friends. "We were on the phone for 18 years," Spielberg said. Now Warner Brothers and Kubrick's family look set to approve handing the project over to Spielberg. 'AI' is the tale of a young "robot" boy. Kubrick's brother-in-law Jan Harlan said Spielberg was the ideal director: "He would bring out both the human and philosophical side of the story."
