Hannibal: Gary Oldman is now back in the mix for MGM and Universal Pictures' "Hannibal." According to The Hollywood Reporter, negotiations reportedly had stalled over the issue of Oldman's billing, but he is now back in talks to play the role of Hannibal's former victim and nemesis Mason Verger.

Road Trip - Film Review (Mixed)

Star Wars: Episode II: Pre-production continues on "Episode II," with the script nearing completion. George Lucas has written several drafts of the screenplay and set the stage for the action, events and characters to be seen in the movie. To refine the script into its final drafts, Lucas has enlisted the aid of screenwriter Jonathan Hales. Hales and Lucas have had an association through "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles." Hales wrote or co-wrote several episodes of the TV series. Thanks to StarWars.com.

Untitled Nancy Pimental Project: Cameron Diaz is circling the lead role in Columbia Pictures' offbeat romantic comedy the "Untitled Nancy Pimental Project" for director Roger Kumble and producer Cathy Konrad. Columbia paid $1 million upfront for the untitled spec from "South Park" staff writer Nancy Pimental last July. According to THR, the story, a somewhat bawdy take on the traditional genre, is about a girl who finds that she is forced to educate herself on the etiquette of wooing the opposite sex when she finally meets Mr. Right.

Scooby-Doo, the live-action feature based on the Saturday morning cartoon that is being developed at Warner Bros., is on the fast track now that scribe James Gunn has turned in his draft. Gunn was hired last August after Mike Myers and his writing partner Jay Kogan, who had penned a draft, withdrew from the project. Ironically, the studio's first choice is for the role of Shaggy is said to be Myers. The script is described as a comedy-horror feature in the vein of "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" or "Ghostbusters," where Scooby and the gang will be called upon to save the world.

Squids: Indelible Pictures, the New Line Cinema-based production company headed by David Fincher and producer Art Linson, now has "Squids" on its plate. Fincher will likely direct the Cold War drama, which is based on an idea Fincher, Linson and scribe David Ayer came up with based on Ayer's real-life Naval experiences. Ayer is penning the script, for which he will receive a backend of $1.5 million based on whether he receives screenplay credit on the finished product, THR said. Ayer's script (due in the studio this summer) will center on a young sailor who comes of age on a nuclear submarine during the final days of the Cold War. An early 2001 start date is being eyed.

Queen of the Damned: Wes Bentley ("American Beauty") has dropped out of "Queen of the Damned," Warner Bros.' big-screen adaptation of the Anne Rice novel. At the same time, singer Aaliyah ("Romeo Must Die") is set to star in the project as the queen. According to Bentley's reps, the actor left the project because he felt he needed to take time off after a whirlwind year that included the unexpected success of (and activity that surrounded) the Oscar-winning "Beauty" as well as the completion of two other features, "Soul Survivor" and "Kingdom Come." Bentley's departure put a wrench into the works as the studio needs to move forward because the option on Rice's material expires in October. According to THR, the project is scheduled to go before the cameras Aug. 21 in Australia.

Frank Darabont

Forbidden Planet: Frank Darabont ("The Green Mile") is now officially in talks to come aboard New Line Cinema's remake of the 1956 sci-fi feature "Forbidden Planet" as producer/director, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Based on "The Tempest" - set in outer space - its about a group of space travelers who visit a planet inhabited by a man, his daughter and a robot.

Spider-Man: More speculation on who'll sign a three-pic deal to play Peter Parker/Spidey today. According to Variety, the lead candidates are: Heath Ledger ("The Patriot"), Wes Bentley ("American Beauty"), Chris Klein ("American Pie"), Tobey Maguire ("The Cider House Rules"), Ewan McGregor ("Star Wars: Episode I") and Leonardo DiCaprio.

A Beautiful Mind: Ron Howard ("EDtv") is negotiating to next direct “A Beautiful Mind,” an adaptation of Sylvia Nasar’s book about John Forbes Nash Jr., a Nobel Prize-winning genius who became a paranoid schizophrenic. The film, which has the interest of several A-list stars, among them Tom Cruise, will begin shooting at the end of the year for Universal and Imagine, with Brian Grazer producing. More >>>

Bridget Jones' Diary: After weeks of speculation, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth have been confirmed to co-star in "Bridget Jones' Diary," alongside Renee Zellweger. Firth ("Shakespeare in Love") was cast to play the romantic lead opposite Zellweger, with Grant ("Notting Hill") portraying his rival. Variety reports that "Diary," produced by Working Title Films and directed by rookie Sharon Maguire, starts shooting later this month.

Runt: Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst is committed to directing “Runt,” a dark tale following a picked-on high schooler who takes arms against his rivals. The musician is being mentored for his helming debut by David Fincher ("Fight Club"). The script was written by William J. Coakley and Christian Van Gregg; Fincher will likely produce with Michael London and Amy Brown. According to Variety, the project is about to be shopped for a distributor and financier so Durst can begin production in the fall.

Harry Potter: Warner Bros.' film version of the top-selling children's book "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" may end up being pulled out of summer 2001, where it is officially slated for release. THR said that a mid-November start might be more realistic given the bevy of special effects involved and the need to cast the picture. "Potter" got off to a slow start after awaiting Steven Spielberg's decision on whether he'd direct the film or not. The studio signed Chris Columbus to helm in March. "The slow decision from Steven Spielberg hurt us," one person close to the project said. "It's going to be tough to make the date, but we're gonna try. Our sights are set for a summer release, but we'll have to see." WB distribution president Dan Fellman says "Potter" is "right now scheduled for a 2001 summer release. There has been no discussion at all from my camp of moving it."

Kerr Smith

Spider-Man: While talking to "Big Hit" magazine, Kerr Smith ("Dawson's Creek") admits that if Jude Law turns down the role, he'd be interested in playing Peter Parker/Spidey. Thanks to MovieHole.

D-Tox: Universal Pictures has (again) rescheduled Sylvester Stallone's police thriller "D-Tox" from the fall of this year to 2001, for probable release during the first quarter. According to Variety, the shift avoids a direct conflict with Warner Bros.' fall release of "Get Carter," which also stars Stallone.

Will Smith Projects: Will Smith recently talked about a few of his upcoming project on Access Hollywood, and below is a brief summary with thanks to Stax.

Will Smith was on Access Hollywood last night and announced he was "all signed up" for MiB 2, and that it had a "brilliant" script about "intergalactic war" that takes them off the earth for awhile. He also said he turned down "Ali" about 8 times before the champ himself called and asked him to do it. He is only a couple of days into training now and starts filming it in six months. Makes me wonder: with Men in Black 2 and Ali I guess he won't be doing "Phone Booth" anytime soon despite his having signed onto it a few months back?

Stuart Baird ("U.S. Marshals") has come aboard to direct two action-thrillers in development at Warner Bros.: "High Tide" and "Nowhere to Hide." "Tide" tells the story of a man who, while vacationing in Alaska, gets caught in quicksand and whose fiancee must save him before the rising tide kills him. "Nowhere" is described as "The Fugitive" meets "No Way Out." According to THR, the script by Patrick Lee tells the story of a master thief who, masquerading as a cop, is sent to investigate his own robbery. When he discovers that a double murder was committed during the burglary, he must find and implicate the real killers without exposing his true identity.

Untitled: Kevin Spacey has come aboard to star in and produce an untitled romantic comedy for Sony-based Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich's Centropolis Entertainment and Di Novi Pictures. Previously titled "The Role of a Lifetime," Allison Burnett's script revolved around an actress who turns the tables on a director when he tries to persuade her to star in his play. The project now centers on a legitimate stage director who is forced to cast a movie star in order to launch his play on Broadway. Wendy Wasserstein ("The Object of My Affection") is reworking the script. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project could go before the cameras before year's end. And while no director is yet attached, Devlin did not rule out the possibility of Spacey, Emmerich or himself taking the helm.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Peter Gaulke and Gerry Swallow wrote the screenplay.

Miss Congeniality: Matt Dillon is set to join Sandra Bullock and Michael Caine in the comedy "Miss Congeniality." According to THR, the project is slated to go before cameras next month with Donald Petrie ("My Favorite Martian") at the helm. "Congeniality" is about an FBI agent (Bullock) who goes undercover as a beauty pageant contestant to thwart the efforts of a group threatening to bomb the event. Caine plays an image consultant who must transform Bullock from a tough cop into Miss New Jersey, while Dillon portrays a hardcore FBI agent who trains Bullock in fighting techniques and finds there is sexual tension between them.

Speaking of Sex: James Spader, Lara Flynn Boyle, Jay Mohr, Bill Murray, Melora Walters and Catherine O'Hara are negotiating to star in "Speaking of Sex," a comedy to be directed by John McNaughton ("Wild Things"). Variety reports that the film revolves around the attempt by a female marriage counselor (played by Boyle) and a male depression expert (played by Spader) to solve the marital problems of a troubled couple (played by Mohr and Walters). Also involved are a couple of attorneys (Murray and O'Hara), and the result is a lot of unexpected coupling. Written by Rob Perez, "40 Days" tells the story of a man (Kutcher) who tests himself by swearing off physical contact from women for 40 days, during which he meets the woman of his dreams (Holmes).

Keith Moon Project: The Who's late drummer, Keith Moon, is the subject of a film being developed by director Brad Silberling ("City of Angels") with cooperation from the band's remaining members - Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle. Upon hearing of the potential Who picture, Nicolas Cage was quoted as saying, "I am Pete Townshend!" Variety reports that production still appears to be a ways off, as Silberling is determined to make his passion project "Baby's in Black" next.
