July 6th 2000 - Movie News/Rumors

Liam Neeson

Gangs of New York: Liam Neeson is in final talks to star in Martin Scorsese's $100 million period crime movie "Gangs of New York," starring opposite Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz. "I am pretty sure I will be in 'Gangs' as the character who plays Leonardo DiCaprio's father," said Neeson at the Taormina Film Festival. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the picture is expected to start shooting in Rome's Cinecitta Studios next month. Oscar-winning Italian costume designer Dante Ferretti ("Kundun") is busy reconstructing the New York of the 1800s.

Big Trouble: Zooey Deschanel ("Mumford") has landed one of the leads in the Disney ensemble drama "Big Trouble," taking a role that Katie Holmes ("Go") had been negotiating to assume. The film, adapted from a Dave Barry novel, centers on a group of people whose lives are temporarily turned upside down when a nuclear device is discovered in a suitcase at the Miami airport. Variety reports that director Barry Sonnenfeld begins shooting on location at the end of the month.

Star Trek X: StarTrek.Com confirms that John Logan ("Any Given Sunday," "Gladiator") is the primary screenwriter for the next film. In related news, Rick Berman recently told the Star Trek Communicator magazine fans can expect "a very action-oriented story that revolves around a remarkable villain. A higher percentage of this film will take place in outer space than in our previous films." "Star Trek X" (tentative title) is scheduled for release the weekend of Thanksgiving 2001.

John Q: Kimberly Elise will star opposite Denzel Washington in "John Q" for director Nick Cassavetes and New Line Cinema. Shooting is scheduled to begin early next month. "John Q," written by James Kearn, is about a down-on-his-luck father (Washington) whose son needs a heart transplant. When insurance won't cover the operation, the father decides to take the hospital's emergency room hostage until the doctors agree to perform the surgery. Elise has been cast as Washington's wife and the mother of their ailing son. According to THR, Robert Duvall also stars as a gruff police detective/hostage negotiator.

Remember the Titans

Remember the Titans: Poster for "Remember the Titans," a drama starring Denzel Washington, Will Patton and Scott Miles.

Arac Attack: Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich ("Godzilla," "The Patriot") are going to unleash another giant creature on the big screen. "We're heading down to Australia to produce Arac Attack. It's about a giant spider attack on a small town in Nevada. It's kind of inspired by the 1955 sci-fi classic Tarantula. It's going to be a small-budget, big-bug movie," says Devlin. Thanks to JAM! Movies.

Chicken Run II: A spokesman for Bristol-based Aardman Animation said there is little possibility of a sequel. "We are not going to consider a "Chicken Run II," Arthur Sheriff told Reuters. "The studio's next movie will be an Aardman version of the Aesop Fable 'The Tortoise and the Hare' - a 'Tortoise and the Hare' meets "Spinal Tap.." Sheriff said Aardman also plans a feature version of the "Wallace & Gromit" shorts about a man whose oddball inventions cause trouble for him and his dog. "Those productions will occupy us for at least the next five years," he said. "There is of course pressure for a 'Chicken Run' sequel but right now it would be impossible." Full Story >>>
