June 23rd 2000 - Movie News/Rumors

Sharon Stone

Basic Instinct 2: Sharon Stone has signed an eight-figure deal to reprise her role as icepick-wielding, seductive murder suspect Catherine Tramell in "Basic Instinct 2." Neither original screenwriter Joe Eszterhas, director Paul Verhoeven or co-star Michael Douglas will return. The picture will begin shooting this fall for domestic release in late 2001 or early 2002. Variety reports that a director is expected to be landed shortly. The sequel has been written by "Desperately Seeking Susan" scribes Leora Barish and Henry Bean.

Bedazzled Scary Movie The Kid

Posters: One for the Harold Ramis-directed comedy "Bedazzled," starring Brendan Fraser and Elizabeth Hurley. The "Scary Movie" poster and one for Bruce Willis' comedy "The Kid." Thanks to 'Jaanus,' ScaryMovie.com and CHUD.

How to Eat Fried Worms: Joe Nussbaum, who directed the short film "George Lucas in Love," will make his feature directorial debut on "How to Eat Fried Worms" for Nickelodeon Films and magine Entertainment. Based on the children's book by Thomas Rockwell, "Worms" is about a fifth-grader who is challenged by a classmate to eat 15 worms in one day. In a quest for individuality, he takes the bet. According to THR, the project carries with it themes of peer pressure, staying true to one's self and the lengths people often go to in an effort to fit in.

Beyond Borders - Script Review (Mixed)

Heaven: Giovanni Ribisi is in final negotiations to star opposite Cate Blanchett in Miramax Films' $11 million-budgeted drama "Heaven." According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project is slated to begin shooting in Italy and Germany this month with director Tom Tykwer ("Run Lola Run") making his English-language directorial debut. Based on the final screenplay from the late Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski, which he wrote with writing partner Krzysztof Piesiewicz, "Heaven" revolves around a woman (Blanchett) who takes the law into her own hands after police ignore her pleas to arrest the man responsible for her husband's death. She finds herself not only under arrest for murder but falling in love with an officer (Ribisi).

Sam Neill

Jurassic Park 3: Sam Neill is in talks to come aboard Universal Pictures' "Jurassic Park 3" for director Joe Johnston ("The Rocketeer," "Jumanji"). Although there is no completed script yet, production is said to be slated for a summer start. According to The Hollywood Reporter, details on the project are being tightly guarded by the studio.

Christian Bale [in 'American Psycho']

Librium: Christian Bale ("American Psycho") has landed the lead in Dimension's "Librium," a futuristic thriller about a fascist world in which emotions are forbidden. Bale plays a law-enforcement agent who rebels against the system. According to Variety, Emily Watson and Taye Diggs will star opposite Bale in the film, which was written and will be directed by Kurt Wimmer ("The Thomas Crown Affair"). Principal photography is set to begin in Europe in July.

Spider-Man: Columbia Pictures is getting one step closer to finding its Spider-Man, THR reports. On Friday, the studio had several young actors don tights to screen-test for director Sam Raimi, including Scott Speedman ("Felicity"), Jay Rodan ("Caveman's Valentine") and James Franco ("Whatever It Takes"). Also rumored to still be in the mix: Tobey Maguire.

Harry Potter: In what is shaping up as a stellar British cast for the film version of J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," Robbie Coltrane ("The World Is Not Enough") is in negotiations with Warner Bros., director Chris Columbus and producer David Heyman to play the large, friendly giant Hagrid (the games keeper at Harry Potter's magical school, Hogwarts) who is expelled from the school under mysterious circumstances. According to The Hollywood Reporter, British actress Maggie Smith is also understood to be talking about a role in the film, though it is unclear whether Smith's schedule will work out because of other commitments.

Serendipity: Molly Shannon ("Saturday Night Live") is in final negotiations to join Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack in Miramax Films' romantic comedy "Serendipity." Written by Marc Klein, "Serendipity" is about two college students (Beckinsale and Cusack) who meet and fall in love in one night. Ten years later, when each is on the verge of marrying someone else, they become convinced that they are soulmates and embark on a race against time to find each other. Shannon would play Beckinsale's lesbian best friend who owns a candle shop. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project is slated to shoot next month in New York and Toronto with director Peter Chelsom ("The Mighty") at the helm.
