August 15th/16th 1998 - Movie News/Rumours

Rush Hour Next Stop Wonderland At First Sight

Movie Posters: A poster for the upcoming Jackie Chan/Chris Tucker film "Rush Hour," one for the indie flick "Next Stop Wonderland" and finally a poster for the Val Kilmer/Mira Sorvino movie "At First Sight." Thanks to 'Kevin' for some of the posters.

Bringing Out The Dead: Patricia Arquette will star with husband Nicolas Cage for the first time in "Bringing Out The Dead'' for director Martin Scorsese. Cage will play a burned-out paramedic who is haunted by the people he's sent to save, and especially by the ones he couldn't save. Ving Rhames will also star.

Summer Of Sam: John Savage ("The Deer Hunter'') has signed to play a photographer in director Spike Lee's biopic "Summer of Sam.'' Set during the disco era, "Summer of Sam'' is about porn star and punk rocker Pepe Valentine. The film also stars John Leguizamo, Jennifer Esposito, Mira Sorvino and Bebe Neuwirth.

Pittsburgh: Danny DeVito is in talks to join the cast of Universal Pictures' "Pittsburgh" (a k a "Ballbusted"). He will join previously reported cast members Norm Macdonald, Dave Chappelle and Elaine Stritch. "Pittsburgh" is a comedy about a disgruntled chauffeur who kidnaps his rich employer's dog.

Power And Grace: Variety reports that Barry Sonnenfeld may direct Will Smith in the Muhammad Ali movie "Power And Grace."' The script examines Ali's early days and his rise as a defining figure not only in sports but also in politics. Following his refusal to fight in the Vietnam War on religious grounds, Ali was stripped of his heavyweight title. The film also covers Ali's comeback battles with Joe Frazier and the recapture of his title from the seemingly invincible George Foreman.

The Cider House Rules: Variety reports that Tobey Maguire has signed to star in the screen adaptation of "The Cider House Rules." Lasse Hallstrom ("My Life as a Dog") is directing the Miramax project from author John Irving's screenplay about a young man who leaves the orphanage where he was raised only to discover that his future is connected to his past.

50 Violins: Meryl Streep will replace Madonna for the lead role in "50 Violins." Madonna exited the Miramax project in July due to creative differences with director Wes Craven. The picture is based on the Oscar-nominated documentary "Small Wonders" about Roberta Tzavaras. The East Harlem violin teacher trained a number of inner-city hopefuls, some of them reaching Carnegie Hall standards.

Command & Conquer: Seems like Westwood Studios are planning on making a movie based on their famous strategy game, "Command & Conquer." The general story is set in a post-apocalyptic future where two global forces fight for control of Earth and its remaining population. Thanks to Kevin for the info.

The Muse: Variety also reports that Steven Wright ("Half Baked") has signed for a small role in Albert Brooks' "The Muse." He joins a cast that includes Brooks, Sharon Stone, Andie MacDowell and Jeff Bridges. Directors Martin Scorsese, Rob Reiner and James Cameron will play themselves in cameos.

Shrek: Mike Myers ("Austin Powers," "54") will do the voice for the title role in DreamWorks Animation's "Shrek." The animated feature, scheduled for release in 2000, also stars the vocal talents of Eddie Murphy, John Lithgow, Linda Hunt and Cameron Diaz. "Strek" is a fractured fairy tale based on the children's book by William Steig. The story assumes the form and nature of a traditional fairy tale only to have an ugly, smelly ogre show up instead of a prince charming.

Ronin Ronin 54 How Stella Got Her Groove Back

Movie Posters: First the advance and regular posters for "Ronin." A poster for "54" starring Mike Myers, Salma Hayek and Neve Campbell. Finally a poster for "How Stella Got Her Groove Back," a movie that opens this Friday in the US.

Entrapment: Will Patton ("Armageddon," "Fled") is set to join Sean Connery, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Ving Rhames in "Entrapment." Connery plays a great art thief who is being pursued by an undercover insurance investigator (Zeta-Jones). Patton will play Cruz, a former FBI agent and Zeta-Jones' boyfriend. Jon Amiel ("Copycat") will helm the movie.

Still Life: Michael Douglas and Meryl Streep are set to star in "Still Life," a family drama directed by Mimi Leder ("Deep Impact"). The project is about an estranged couple who, after the death of their daughter, are forced to confront their past and their relationship with one another - while trying to raise their grandchildren. The screenplay was written by Andrea King.

Movie Trailers: Lots of new trailers today. One for the Michelle Pfeiffer/Treat Williams starrer "The Deep End Of The Ocean." A trailer for Sandra Bullock's upcoming film "Practical Magic." The full trailer for "Ronin" and a better quality "Prince of Egypt" trailer.

She's All That: Gabrielle Union (TV's "7th Heaven") has inked to co-star opposite Anna Paquin and Freddie Prinze Jr. in "She's All That." The high school romantic comedy is about a teenager who bets he can turn the school's geekiest girl into a prom queen and then falls in love with her. Union will play a member of the "Popular Girls" clique.

Mystery Men: Lena Olin has landed a role in "Mystery Men," joining William Macy, Geoffrey Rush, Hank Azaria and Janeane Garofalo in the film about a group of misfit superheroes. The movie, directed by Kinka Usher, will begin shooting this fall.

The Haunting Of Hill House: Jan De Bont is in talks to direct a remake of Robert Wise's horror film "The Haunting Of Hill House" for DreamWorks. The picture is an adaptation of Shirley Jackson's novel of the same name about a group of people who gather in an old house to figure out whether a ghost is lodged within. A tentative release date is currently Christmas 1999.

Simon Birch Return To Paradise Why Do Fools Fall In Love

Austin Powers II: Heather Graham ("Boogie Nights") has inked to star opposite Michael Myers in the $30 million comedy, "Austin Powers II." The sequel is scripted by Myers and Michael McCullers, with director Jay Roach returning. Graham will play the female lead role of Felicity Shagwell.

Gun Shy: Sandra Bullock is set to produce and star in an indie film tentatively titled "Gun Shy," a black comedy about an undercover agent caught up in a New York City predicament. Bullock will play a nurse who becomes the romantic interest of the undercover agent. Eric Blakeney will helm the project from his own script, with a budget set for about $10 million.

Evermere: Chuck Russell ("Eraser," "The Mask") is set to direct the sci-fi fantasy "Evermere." The picture is based on a script by David Goyer and James Robinson. "Evermere" tells the story of an orphan boy who learns on his 17th birthday that he is heir to the throne in an alternate universe, where he is transported and finds himself locked in battle with his uncle, who has usurped the throne.

Star Wars: Episode One: The Official Site recently reported that the scheduled release date for Episode One is May 21st, 1999. Fox will not set the movie for widest possible release, but will bring the film to theaters with the emphasis on quality. George Lucas commented: "I'm not trying to break any records. I'm interested in quality presentation, and a positive group experience for everyone who comes to see this film. It's about sight and sound and the movie itself."
