X-Men

X-Men: A (fuzzy) look at the 'X-Men' advance poster. Thanks goes to Coming Attractions and Stax.

Walk Don't Walk: TV director Oz Scott (""Chicago Hope") is set to helm the $5 million feature "Walk Don't Walk" starring Anna Wilding ("Highway 61"), who will also produce. "Walk" is the story of a detective who is forced to make a moral decision when a nanny becomes a suspect in a crime she didn't commit. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Scott is scheduled to begin production on the project in March in New York.

Crocodile Dundee Returns?: The following report does make sense, but should still be treated as a rumor for now. A huge thanks to 'Clint.'

As an Australian I tend to keep my eye on what local projects are being announced and here's what you will WANT TO TELL ALL ABOUT... Anyway, I was sent an email from a source yesterday about Paul Hogan doing another "Crocodile Dundee" film. I was informed that the project was over at Lion's Gate and that Hoges and his long time producer pal, John Cornell, were both working on this sequel.
First thought was "oh no"!, Hoges is getting a bit too old to play energetic adventurer, Michael J. Crocodile Dundee, for a start. But it all sounds like a ploy to save the dying career of Hogan, whose film career, outside of "Croc" has been (excuse the pun!) a "Croc". Tonight, the Australian TV program "The Movie Show" (SBS) confirmed the contents of my email.
Paul Hogan is indeed going to do the film and it will be called CROCODILE DUNDEE RETURNS. It is going to shoot next year, and Linda Kozlowski, is also returning to reprise her role as the big shot journo who fell for the outback adventurer in the original 1986 hit. Anyway, looks like the millenium better get ready for Crocodile Dundee again!

La Gran Vida: Salma Hayek will star in a Spanish-language comedy called "La Gran Vida" (The Great Life). This is the first time she'll shoot a movie in Spain. Hayek will play Lola, a Mexican waitress working in Madrid who befriends a 30-year-old suicidal man (Carmelo Gomez), who has borrowed $1 million to blow on his last day on Earth, knowing he'll be killed anyway if he fails to return the dough. Having met Lola, however, he decides that life may be worth living after all. Variety reports that the $4.3 mill. film will shoot in Madrid for nine weeks, starting Jan. 27. It'll mark the feature film debut of TV director Antonio Cuadri.

Simon West

Tomb Raider: Paramount Pictures is in advanced negotiations with Simon West ("Con Air" and "The General's Daughter") to direct "Tomb Raider." Variety reports that the screenplay (which supposedly bears similarities to "Raiders of the Lost Ark") remains the stumbling block. Producers Lawrence Gordon and Lloyd Levin are still on board and will work with West and scribes Michael Werb and Michael Colleary ("Face/Off") on the rewrite. The picture remains on Paramount's fast track.

X-Men: The Comics Continuum reports that Mystique will shape-shift and impersonate at least one key character in the upcoming 'X-Men' movie. Mystique (played by Rebecca Romijn-Stamos) will be blue-skinned in the film like her comics counterpart. The character that she will impersonate is a male. Filming will continue into February.

Bobby Darin Biopic: Kevin Spacey ("American Beauty") looks set to play Bobby Darin in a biopic for WB. Variety first heard about Spacey’s involvement on Monday, which was the 26th anniversary of Darin’s death. He was only 37 when his heart gave out following open heart surgery. Spacey has also had talks with Darin’s son, Dodd, on the biopic.

Gates of Fire: Michael Mann ("The Insider") is in negotiations to direct "Gates of Fire," an adaptation of Steven Pressfield's 1998 Greek epic novel, for Universal Pictures. Mann will also produce with George Clooney and Robert Lawrence. Pressfield's novel tells the story of the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C. when 300 Spartan warriors held back rampaging soldiers from the Persian Empire for six days before being massacred. The story is told through the eyes of Xeones, a battle squire who is the sole survivor of the doomed army. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the screen adaptation was scripted by David Self ("13 Days"). No start date has been set for the project.

Captain Corelli's Mandolin: Illness has forced director Roger Michell ("Notting Hill") to drop out of the Nicolas Cage starrer "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" for Universal Pictures and Working Title Films. The studio and producers have shifted their sights to director John Madden ("Shakespeare in Love"). "Captain Corelli's Mandolin," based on Louis de Bernieres' 1994 best-selling novel, is described as a "Doctor Zhivago"-like love story set on the Greek island of Cephallonia during World War II. Screenwriter Shawn Slovo ("A World Apart") wrote the script's most recent draft, which tells the story of Italian Capt. Antonio Corelli (Cage) who, while stationed on Cephallonia, engages in a heated affair with the local doctor's daughter, causing strong political and personal allegiances to come into play. According to THR, the dramatic project is slated to go before cameras in April.

Red Planet - Script Review (Mixed/Positive)

Hannibal: Anthony Hopkins has officially agreed to star in "Hannibal," after seeing a rewrite of the script by Steven Zaillian ("Schindler's List"). While all sides involved confirmed that Hopkins "loves the script," the actor's reps must work out a deal for him to reprise his role as Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Jodie Foster is still considering whether to reprise her role as FBI agent Clarice Starling. THR states that there are ongoing discussions, and Foster will not decide until after reading the rewrite.

Timeline: A deal is imminent for scribe Jeff Maguire ("In the Line of Fire") to adapt Michael Crichton’s novel “Timeline” for Paramount Pictures. The storyline concerns three students working on an archaeological dig. The trio must travel back in time to 14th century France to rescue their eclectic professor, an obsessive academician who has become trapped after venturing into his favorite era to study it first-hand. Variety reports that the flick is being produced by its helmer, Richard Donner, along with Lauren Shuler Donner and James Van Wyck.
