The Phantom of the Opera: Alfonso Arau ("Like Water for Chocolate") is in negotiations to helm a feature film remake of Gaston Leroux's classic 1911 novel "The Phantom of the Opera." Acording to The Hollywood Reporter, the romantic horror story centers on a mad composer living in the cellars of the Paris Opera House who teaches a young soprano to sing after she sells him her soul for the sake of her opera career. Arau's version is expected to be a contemporary retelling of the French tale set in modern New York and seen through the eyes of the young diva Christina. Universal's version will not be a musical but will include pop music and classical opera.

The Notebook: Ashley Judd ("Double Jeopardy") is in negotiations to star for director Jim Sheridan in “The Notebook,” New Line’s adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ bestselling novel. It soon becomes clear that the patient is the woman in the notebook. Afflicted with Alzheimer’s, she greets the tale as a new one each time it’s read to her, and her narrator is the man who ended up with her, though which guy that is remains a secret until the end.
