** January 24th/25th 1998 - Movie News/Rumours **
Cruel Inventions - Sarah Michelle Gellar, star of the WB Network hit "Buffy the Vampire Slayer,'' will star in "Cruel Inventions,'' a modern retelling of "Dangerous Liaisons'' set in New York City. That's according to Variety. Ryan Phillippe will co-star. The pair worked together in the sleeper horror hit "I Know What You Did Last Summer.'' Gellar also co-starred in "Scream 2,'' while Phillippe stars in "54,'' the upcoming Miramax film about the heyday of New York disco Studio 54.
True Crime - Clint Eastwood, who directed the box office disappointment ''Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil,'' has signed on to his next feature project. Variety says he will direct and star in the suspense thriller "True Crime,'' playing a down-and-out newspaperman who works desperately to prove a prisoner's innocence 26 hours before his execution. The Warner Bros. picture is slated to start production in May, and will mark Eastwood's 21st outing as director.
Primary Colors - Will the sexual misconduct allegations leveled against President Clinton influence the marketing strategy for Universal's "Primary Colors''? Variety's Army Archerd said studio executives and the picture's principals met Wednesday night and voiced "mixed feelings'' about whether the "live'' action in D.C. would help or hinder business for the movie. The film is about morality, honor and the mix of politics and the media. John Travolta plays a Southern governor running for president. Emma Thompson has the role of his wife and Larry Hagman plays the opposing candidate. Kathy Bates' character is a campaign worker who uncovers a secret. The movie is due out in March.
The Man In The Iron Mask - the trailer is now available, thanks to Entertainment Asylum for hosting it!
The Red Door - After a Golden Globe-winning title portrayal in "Evita," Madonna may be close to committing to her next project. This time, she's not singing. According to Variety, Madonna read last week for the lead female role in "The Red Door," an independent film about a brother and sister who, raised by an abusive father, grow apart. They're forced to confront their demons and reconcile when he's near death from AIDS. Mattia Karel ("Cadillac Dreams") is directing; Alan Safron is producing. Plans call for production by summer.
Editors Note - I know the famous "Superbowl Sunday" is coming up today, and as you might know, there will be new clips from the upcoming releases "Armageddon", "Lost In Space", "Sphere" and "The Mask Of Zorro" during the show. So, just like Garth Franklin over at 'Dark Horizons', I would be very glad if someone who knows how could record the clips, and make them into .MOV, .AVI or Real Video files :-) If you can, please send them to me when you've made them, and I'll make sure they come up on a really fast server within a few days!
