July 2nd 1998 - Movie News/Rumours

Stand By Your Man: Alicia Silverstone ("Clueless") is set to star in the upcoming comedy "Stand By Your Man," about a woman whose scheme to achieve instant fame blows up in her face. Silverstone will also serve as an executive producer on "Stand By Your Man."

Scream 3: In a recent interview, when Neve Campbell was asked about her involvement in the third part, she replied: "I'm sure Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first two scripts, will make a great job of it, but it's just that fear I have of being typecast. I've really enjoyed these first two movies, and I'm very proud of them, but I think I could easily become 'that girl from the Scream movies' if I stuck around for the third installment."

I Am Legend: Rob Bowman ("The X-Files Movie") is in talks to direct "I Am Legend," the big-budget Warner Bros. film that once had Ridley Scott attached to helm Arnold Schwarzenegger. Rumours indicate that Schwarzenegger is still attached, and they will be working with a much lower budget.

Statistics: Rob Lowe ("Wayne's World") is in talks to star as a disc jockey who witnesses a murder in the upcoming ensemble drama "Statistics." The indie film, which is to begin shooting in September, is the first project from the new production company Zephyr Entertainment. The film will be helmed by James Hickox.

Armageddon: It seems like most people rather enjoyed Armageddon, despite some complaints about the editing and some scientific goofs. Below is a short review sent in by Robert.

Bruce Willis leads a rag-tag bunch of oil drillers into space in one of the greatest summer films of all time. "Armageddon" leaves all past "event movies" in the dust. It obliterates the memory of the misguided "Godzilla", and even eclipses "ID4" in terms of sheer spectacle and excitement. Just about everyone knows the basic story: Big rock is going to hit Earth in 18 days unless we can intercept it and drop a nuke into a drilled shaft inside the asteroid. Bruce Willis plays Harry Stamper, the leader of a colorful group of oil drillers that answer the call to save the world. This is a basic premise but in director Michael Bay's and the screenwriter's hands, it becomes a high tension, never-lets-up, emotional ride. Giving away anything more about the plot would be a crime because the fun in this one is not knowing what will happen next. The special effect are incredible and extremely well done. The initial scene, depicting a meteor shower in Manhattan, is better then anything shown in "Godzilla". The acting is all top notch, with Willis, Billy Bob Thornton, and Liv Tyler standing out of the pack. The dialogue is witty and the pace is break neck. The only problems come from the complete disregard for half a dozen scientific points. (Turbulence in space, flaming rocks in space, etc.) Get past that though and this movie will grab you and not let go.

Anywhere But Here: Shawn Hatosy ("In And Out") has joined the cast of Fox 2000's "Anywhere But Here." The Wayne Wang-directed drama also stars Susan Sarandon and Natalie Portman as an eccentric mother and her high school-aged daughter who move to Beverly Hills from Michigan.

Crimes Of Opportunity: Sharon Stone ("Basic Instinct") is in talks to star in "Crimes Of Opportunity," which will mark Peter Coyote's helming and screenwriting debut. Lions Gate Films will finance and distribute "Crimes."

[Image] Pitch Black: Radha Mitchell ("High Art") has joined the cast of "Pitch Black" from Australia's Intrepid Pictures, which is producing and financing. She joins Cole Hauser and Vin Diesel in the film about a group of marooned space travelers who struggle for survival on a seemingly lifeless sun-scorched world.

Jane will play the lab's shark wrangler who leads survivors in escaping the deadly fish.

Duncan plays John Coffey, a death row inmate accused of murdering two small children. The picture will be directed by Frank Darabont ("The Shawshank Redemption.")
