June 14th 1998 - Movie News/Rumours

Virus Dirty Work

Movie Posters: First off, a poster for the upcoming film "Virus." I haven't heard much about this movie, but the clips I've seen from it are pretty good. Next is a poster for the comedy "Dirty Work." The Virus image is courtesy of Dark Horizons and the Dirty Work poster was donated by Glenn's Movie Montage.

Never Been Kissed: Michael Vartan ("Dead Man's Curve") is set to co-star opposite Drew Barrymore ("The Wedding Singer") in Fox 2000's "Never Been Kissed." Vartan will play a high school teacher who falls in love with Barrymore's character.

Alien: 5: This is most likely not true, but I've heard from several places that Sigourney Weaver has signed for "Alien 5." Confirmation, anybody? This is much too good to be true.

American Psycho: Variety reports that Oliver Stone is having informal talks to take the helm of the controversial serial-killer picture with Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead. At the same time, DiCaprio was the recipient of a $22 million offer from Aurelio Di Laurentiis' Italian film production company for a remake of Ernest Hemingway's "A Farewell to Arms."

Movie Trailers: Two new trailers today. A teaser for the horror film "Disturbing Behavior" is now released. Also a trailer for the Elisabeth Shue/Jessica Lange starrer "Cousin Bette."

Shark Attack: Ernie Hudson ("Ghostbusters", "The Substitute") will star opposite Casper Van Dien ("Starship Troopers") in Nu Image's feature Shark Attack. The film will be produced by Avi Lerner and directed by Bob Misiorowski. Shooting begins in South Africa later this month. The story is about a scientist who is conducting unorthodox experiments on sharks.

The 13th Warrior: An anonymous source who worked on this upcoming project sent in some interesting tidbits, which clears up some details about the characters names. A huge thanks to "Anonymous."

* Omar Sharif's character is not called "Buliwyf", as the Internet Movie Database states. Buliwyf is played by a less-known actor.

* Diane (Venora)'s character is called Queen Weilew (possibly misspelled). It's pronounced Weigh-loo.

* Another producer is Ned Dowd ("While You Were Sleeping.")

* The monsters they fight in the film are called Wendols (though there supposedly was talk about changing this name during shooting.)

* The plot is very much the same as the book, but there is obviously far more dialogue in the movie version.

* Asbjorn "Bear" Riis plays Halga in the movie, and John DeSantis plays Ragnar.

* Antonio's character is the 13th of 13 warriors, the other twelve being Vikings.

Man Wanted: George Tillman Jr. and Robert Teitel ("Soul Food") have teamed with screenwriter/director John Ridley ("U-Turn") to remake Benny Chan's Hong Kong action pic "Man Wanted" for 20th Century Fox.

Can't Hardly Wait Small Soldiers

Movie Posters: Two nice posters today. First a poster for the upcoming film "Can't Hardly Wait" starring Jennifer Love Hewitt and second a slightly different version of the "Small Soldiers" advance poster.

Talos The Mummy: Miramax Films' genre arm Dimension Films has acquired North American distribution rights to "Talos the Mummy," which was directed by Russell Mulcahy ("Highlander"). The picture, which stars Jason Scott Leigh and Louise Lombard, tells the story of an evil spirit that is unleashed on the unsuspecting inhabitants of London.

Dr. Dolittle: The Official Site has finally opened up a bit. It also has a better quality version of the second(?) trailer.

Quicktime Dr. Dolittle - Full Trailer (5.6 MB)

The Castaways: Tom Hanks and director Robert Zemeckis are planning to reteam early next year on "The Castaways." The film is scripted by writer William Broyles ("Apollo 13"). The film, a contemporary story of a man stranded on a deserted island, will be financed and distributed by DreamWorks.

Michaelangel: Richard Grieco ("21 Jump Street") has signed on to the indie murder thriller "Michaelangel," opposite Dennis Hopper. The story follows Grieco's character after a serial killer murders his brother and leaves clues in the form of a bloody expressionistic "painting." Grieco's character is an art historian who plunges into a bizarre Los Angeles art scene to find the killer. William Gove will direct from his own script.

Armageddon - Official? The Negotiator Knock Off

Movie Posters: I was just thinking how long it has been since I've gotten my hands on some new, cool posters. But today all that changed when the Official Armageddon poster, a poster for the upcoming Samuel L. Jackson/Kevin Spacey flick "The Negotiator" and a poster for Van Damme's brand new film "Knock Off" landed in my mailbox. Thanks to "Matt" for the posters!

Halloween: H20: The Official Site reports that the score for the film is currently being worked on in addition to the special effects. The site also reports that the movie will be released August 5th 1998, then pulled and re-released closer to the original Halloween movie.

Autumn In New York: Richard Gere ("The Jackal") is attached to star in the romantic drama "Autumn in New York." The United Artists project is about a May-December affair between a middle-aged playboy whose lifelong practice of avoiding serious relationships is reversed when he unexpectedly falls in love with a much younger woman.

Untitled DreamWorks Project: DreamWorks is jumping into the Western genre by making a top-secret, character-driven film. DreamWorks partner Steven Spielberg could direct the film. The script is being written by Fred Ellis and Monte Williams.

I Still Know (What You Did Last Summer): Below is a link for a clip which supposedly includes some behind-the-scenes footage from the film. Haven't seen the clip yet myself.

Quicktime I Still Know What You Did Last Summer - Clip (2.6 MB)

Eyes Wide Shut: Variety reports that audiences anxious to take a peek at Stanley Kubrick's long-awaited "Eyes Wide Shut" will apparently have to wait a few months longer. Originally slated for a splashy Christmas release, the Tom Cruise/Nicole Kidman starrer has been pushed back until Presidents' Day 1999.

Beautiful: Minnie Driver ("Good Will Hunting") is rumored to star as a wrong-side-of-the-tracks woman obsessed with becoming Miss America in the dark comedy "Beautiful."The film follows a young Illinois woman's journey through the sometimes twisted world of beauty pageants as she ascends from a poor, anonymous existence to the heights of the pageant world. Her abusive, neglectful parents are unsupportive of her quest.
