March 5th/7th 1999 - Movie News/Rumours

The Replacements: Keanu Reeves ("The Matrix") is in advanced talks to star in the football comedy "The Replacements," Daily Variety reported Friday. The Warner Bros. picture is based on the real-life crew of ragtag jocks who served as replacements during the 1987 National Football League players' strike. Reeves would play the leader of the band of misfits who led the Washington Redskins to an impressive winning streak, the paper added. Warner Bros. acquired the project last year as a pitch by Vince McKewin ("Fly Away Home''), who wrote the screenplay. No director is attached to the project as of yet.

Star Wars: Episode II: Mr. Showbiz posted a possible Episode II storyline today, but since George Lucas is far from finished writing the script yet, it's probably just a rough synopsis of the plot. But anyway, might be fun to read for those interested. Click right here to take a look.

The Adventures of Joe Dirt: David Spade is set to star in and co-write Warner Bros.' comedy "The Adventures of Joe Dirt" for producer Robert Simonds ("The Wedding Singer"). "Dirt" tells the story of a disruptive, trailer-park 8-year-old boy whose parents deliberately abandon him at the Grand Canyon during a family vacation. Years later, through a series of flashbacks, he tells his story to a DJ on the air and captivates the city, THR reports.

Eyes Wide Shut: Warner Bros. top brass, including studio chairmen Bob Daly and Terry Semel, got their first look Tuesday night at Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut" during a screening at the Time Warner building in New York. The print came hand-delivered via air messenger and was returned to Kubrick in London immediately after the screening. One source familiar with the movie about sexual obsession said the film, starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, runs slightly longer than two hours and is expected to earn an R rating, THR reports.

Phone Booth: Director Michael Bay ("The Rock") has said yes to 20th Century Fox's "Phone Booth," which he hopes to make for less than $10 million. It is expected that Bay will be joined by his "Bad Boys" star Will Smith if a deal can be worked out. Bay has long said he would do "Phone Booth" if Smith also committed, though the actor has not given an official thumbs up. "Phone Booth" is described as a "Rear Window"-like thriller about a man who enters a telephone booth to answer a ringing phone - and never leaves the booth throughout the movie.

The Incredible Mr. Limpet: Director Steve Oedekerk is officially off Warner Bros.' "The Incredible Mr. Limpet" remake starring Jim Carrey. Oedekerk's departure, which had been anticipated, may affect Carrey's involvement in the title role. The studio this week tapped "Mulan" writer Rita Hsaio to rework the script, which Carrey will read before making any decision. Sources say that the studio has asked the actor to draw up a director's list, although Barry Levinson's name has been bandied about as a possibility. Oedekerk exited the project after months of tension with the studio, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Wing Commander Never Been Kissed The Out-Of-Towners

Movie Posters: The official poster for the sci-fi film "Wing Commander" starring Freddie Prinze Jr., Saffron Burrows and Matthew Lillard. The film is set to be relased March 12th in the US. Also a poster for the romantic Drew Barrymore comedy "Never Been Kissed," which opens April 9th. And a poster for the Steve Martin/Goldie Hawn/John Cleese flick "The Out-Of-Towners." Thanks goes to 'Ryan Quigley' for the great Wing Commander poster!

Next Friday: Music video director Steve Carr is set to make his feature directorial debut in New Line Cinema's "Next Friday," the sequel to 1995's "Friday." The original, which cost less than $5 million and took in $27.4 million domestically, centered on the misadventures of two out-of-work young men in South-Central Los Angeles (Ice Cube and Chris Tucker) in one day. "Next Friday" will pick up where the original left off as Cube's character, Craig, is forced to move out of his neighborhood and stay with his cousins in suburbia, where they relocated after winning the lottery. In a fish-out-of-water story, Craig and his cousins realize that trouble will find them no matter where they live.

Ghostbusters 3: Some great new info on the "Ghostbusters 3" project, with thanks to Popcorn.co.uk.

A third 'Ghostbusters' script is in development. Harold Ramis, who starred and co-wrote the 1984 original movie, told Popcorn the story will involve the original cast (Ramis, Aykroyd and Bill Murray) coming out of retirement to tutor a new set of rookie Ghostbusters to rid the world of a poltergeist plague after Hell is declared to have 'no vacancies' in the 21st century. Ramis also said that Hollywood's hottest young stars are going to be approached. Columbia Pictures will once again produce the film. Bill Murray is suddenly hot property again after his performance in 'Rushmore', and his particaption may cut through the red tape which impedes other projects.

The 13th Warrior: At last, the full trailer for "The 13th Warrior" has been released. Sadly though, the server seems to be very slow. Hopefully the official site will release a copy soon. One strange thing is the fact that Graeme Revell is listed as the composer, even though he was suppose to be replaced by Jerry Goldsmith..

Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K. 2: Punk rocker Billy Idol will provide the lead voice in the animated feature "Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K. 2." The $15 million picture is based on the graphic novel "The Melting Pot,'' and is scheduled for domestic release next fall. It tells the story of an immortal female warrior who seeks revenge on the genocidal Tyler (Idol). (F.A.K.K., her nom de guerre, stands for Federation Assigned Ketogenic Killzone).

Drake Diamond, Exorcist for Hire: Warner Bros. has paid low- against mid-six figures for Arne Olsen's spec script "Drake Diamond, Exorcist for Hire." The script, described as "Ghostbusters" meets "Men in Black," tells the story of a professional exorcist who is called in when a series of bizarre supernatural incidents points to a cataclysmic event foretold by an ancient prophecy. Bill Gerber and Eric Newman of Gerber Pictures will produce "Drake," and Warners production vp Basil Iwanyk and creative exec Steve Crystal will oversee the project.

Vatel: Uma Thurman will take the female lead in Roland Joffe’s upcoming “Vatel,” which is being produced by Gallic giant Gaumont and Alain Goldman’s Legend Enterprises. The English-language pic stars Gerard Depardieu in the title role of a master chef during the days of Louis XIV. Based on a true story, the script was originally written by Jeanne Labrune and adapted into English by Tom Stoppard. Centering on Vatel’s preparations for a royal feast, the $36 million production promises to be lush. “Vatel” will start lensing for a projected 15-week shoot in April with delivery slated for the end of ’99. Sales are being handled by Gaumont Intl.

Scream 2 cast

Scream 3: Variety reports that "Scream 3" is on the fast track for a May production start, now that stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette seem certain to reprise their roles in the slasher sequel. The picture will follow Campbell's character, Sidney, as she leaves college and moves to Hollywood to become an actress. It is tentatively set for a December 10th release, and Kevin Williamson is writing the script as usual.

Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?: George Clooney has signed to make his next movie "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" for filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen. In the Coens' project, Clooney will play the leader of three escapees from a chain gang in the 1930s. The picture tracks their misadventures in Mississippi and other Southern locales as they try to elude a tracker. Co-financiers Disney will handle domestic distribution on the film, while Universal takes foreign.

Vertical Limit: Director Martin Campbell ("The Mask of Zorro") is in final talks to take the helm of "Vertical Limit." The Columbia Pictures project concerns a young climber who retires from the sport after the tragic death of his father. When his sister gets trapped in a vertical cave, he must scale the second-highest mountain in the world to rescue her. No talent is attached, but Columbia wants to get it into production by the end of the year. Campbell will develop Robert King's script with Columbia and producer Phoenix Pictures.

The Flintstones: Viva Rock Vegas: Alan Cumming ("GoldenEye") has signed to play the Great Kazoo in "The Flintstones: Viva Rock Vegas" for Universal. He joins Mark Addy as Fred, Stephen Baldwin as Barney, Kristen Johnston as Wilma and Jane Krakowski as Betty. The Great Kazoo was the alien who popped in on Fred's shoulder from time to time to offer his wisdom.

More Dogs Than Bones: An indie film production called "More Dogs Than Bones" is getting under way with a cast that teams three Oscar-winning actresses - Mercedes Ruehl, Louise Fletcher and Whoopi Goldberg - with Joe Mantegna, Peter Coyote, D.B. Woodside, Debi Mazar and Paul Hipp. Michael Browning has written and will direct the Dream Entertainment black comedy. Browning is best known for scripting the Harrison Ford-Anne Heche action comedy "Six Days Seven Nights." The production, shooting in New York and Los Angeles, is a crime caper in which a group of hapless young people from a rundown part of downtown L.A. are unwittingly caught up with a gang of professional mobsters.
