My Giant

My Giant - I found a nice picture of this upcoming Billy Crystal comedy today. Most of you have probably seen it, but since there wasn't really much news today, I though it would 'spice up' the update a little :-)

Seamless - Only days after signing a five-picture deal with First Miracle Pictures, newcomer thesp Kentaro Seagal has signed to star in Shower Prods. "Seamless," a Gen-X pic set in the retro fashion and music scene. Seagal, 21, a former model and the son of Steven Seagal, will play a hip fashion designer in the film. Debrah Le Mattre directs.

The Nutty Professor II - Variety reports that F. Gary Gray has signed to direct Eddie Murphy in "The Nutty Professor II," which will begin shooting in August. Brian Grazer is producing the film for Imagine and Universal. After helming the low cost/high gross films "Friday" and "Set It Off" at New Line, Gray recently directed Kevin Spacey and Samuel L. Jackson in "The Negotiator" for Warner Bros.

The Crew - After playing studio hopscotch, the mobster comedy "The Crew" has been gathered and greenlit at DreamWorks with Dean Parisot attached to helm, sources said Wednesday. The project will start shooting in mid-June. Barry Fanaro is scripting. Pic had been set for Touchstone, which disagreed over the director and put it in turnaround. Miramax, 20th Century Fox and others showed interest.

Laws Of Madness - Brad Pitt is negotiating to star in "Laws of Madness," a Chris Gerolmo-scripted and directed adaptation of a Michael Laudor book. It tells the true story of a 24-year-old law student whose career dreams were jeopardized when he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He overcame the affliction, with the help of his father. The project, which will be produced by Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer, has been a high priority for Universal and Imagine since it was purchased in partial manuscript form in early 1996 for $1.5 million.

Titanic - After breaking an endless series of box office records, "Titanic" this week crossed over the ultimate threshhold: to no one's surprise, it became the first film to pass $1 billion in worldwide theatrical box office. The Fox-Paramount co-production docked in Sunday with a combined domestic and international gross of $1,002,706,625. Of that amount, $427 million was generated from North American screens, while overseas it's chalked up $575.7 million.

March 2nd 1998 - Movie News/Rumours

Three to Tango - Variety reports that "Friends" co-star Matthew Perry is in talks to topline the Outlaw Prods./Warner Bros. comedy "Three to Tango" opposite Neve Campbell, according to sources close to the project. Story is about an architect who is mistakenly assumed to be gay by a powerful businessman who's considering the architect for a major design job. When the businessman asks the architect to keep track of his young mistress, the architect falls in love with her, but finds he must continue to pretend he's gay.

Steven Seagal is set to star in and produce a $40 million battle epic about 12th century Mongol Genghis Khan, the actor said. "Khan is the story of a man who conquered the known world in horrific ways," Seagal told Daily Variety. "But he was also one of the most brilliant strategists who ever lived." The untitled project is expected to start shooting in the fall. Seagal will produce the film with his business partner Julius Nasso. Seagal just finished starring in the independent action movie "The Patriot," which is currently in post-production. He was last seen in "Fire Down Below."

Box Office - For the 11th weekend, ''Titanic'' was tops at the U.S. box office. But while the picture continues to push ahead into the record books, it slipped slightly in this latest weekend. Preliminary figures show "Titanic'' earned $19.7 million, its first dip below the $20 million mark. Still the film easily outdistanced this weekend's runner-up, "The Wedding Singer,'' which took in $9 million. [ Titanic ]

Man on the Moon - In what became a most hotly contested competition among A-list actors, Jim Carrey was chosen Friday evening by director Milos Forman to play comic Andy Kaufman in "Man on the Moon," the biopic for Jersey Films and Universal based on the script by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. The decision was based on a filmed audition that several actors gave to show how they'd play Kaufman, the unusual comic who died of lung cancer at age 33 in 1984.

Hulk - Forget kryptonite, gamma ray-ed mutants and other sinister elements, the key to stopping superheroes is a big budget. In the latest example of a budget felling a comic book project, Universal Pictures has halted "Hulk," its bigscreen adaptation of the Marvel Comics series. Faced with a $100 million budget, a first-time director and production looming just over a month away, last week Universal put a stop to the film, which is written and directed by Jonathan Hensleigh and produced by Gale Anne Hurd.

New Project - Disney's Touchstone Pictures has made a deal for Barry Sonnenfeld to direct a film about the bizarre rise and fall of Steve Banerjee, the creator of the male strip club Chippendales. The studio made a mid-six figure outright purchase of screen rights to "Chippendales," an unpublished book by Rodney Shelton. Touchstone will hire a scribe to adapt the book into the "Casino" of the male dancing industry.
