April 2nd-4th 1999 - Movie News/Rumours

The Wild, Wild West

The Wild, Wild West: Here it is. The official poster for the Will Smith, Kevin Kline, Kenneth Branagh and Salma Hayek film "Wild Wild West." Sorry for the delay in posting this image for you all. Enjoy!

The Blair Witch Project: Ain't It Cool News have gotten an exclusive teaser for this upcoming film. Can't say I've heard about it until now, but it sounds pretty promising.

Charlie's Angels: Cameron Diaz is in final negotiations to join Drew Barrymore in Columbia Pictures' "Charlie's Angels," an updated movie version of the 1970s Aaron Spelling/Leonard Goldberg television series. Sources said Columbia will start zeroing in on the third key cast member of the film, which has no director but is expected to go in the fall. "Angels" centers on three glamorous female detectives who work undercover. Goldberg will produce the film with Barrymore and her partner Nancy Juvonen's Flower Films, THR reports.

Matrix: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros.' "The Matrix" grossed a dazzling $4.8 million in North American theaters Wednesday, the biggest pre-Easter opening ever. That's nearly double the previous record of $2.9 million set by Paramount's "Indecent Proposal" on April 7, 1993. The impressive opening bodes well for the film's weekend prospects as "Matrix" has been tracking strongly in prerelease polls. The sci-fi actioner starring Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne opened in 2,704 theaters Wednesday and adds 145 on Friday. The film was helmed by Larry and Andy Wachowski.

Editors Note: Thanks to Craig Guiboche for adding the terrific scan of the "Wild Wild West" poster yesterday. I added the new 'Link of the Week' feature today. This will each week include a new movie related site. I'm still not sure how to go about placing votes for future sites, but I'll come up with something soon.

Galaxy Quest: Sigourney Weaver is near a deal to star with Tim Allen in the comedy "Galaxy Quest.'' She and Allen would play members of a crew of a cult-favorite sci-fi TV series who are recruited by a group of aliens to save their imperiled race. Alan Rickman is also in talks to star in the DreamWorks film, which Dean Parisot (''Home Fries'') will direct, Variety reports.

The Catcher Was a Spy: George Clooney ("Out of Sight") is in final talks to star in and produce "The Catcher Was a Spy,'' a baseball spy thriller about the true-life exploits of Morris "Moe'' Berg. Based on the 1994 book by Nicholas Dawidoff, the project had been languishing in development at Miramax, but the deal lapsed recently, and Clooney took it to Warner Bros., where his Maysville Productions company is based. Stan Chervin will adapt the book. Full Story >>>

Play It to the Bone: Lucy Liu ("Ally McBeal") has joined the cast of Ron Shelton's new film, "Play It to the Bone," which is being produced by Shelton and his Shanghai'd Films partner Stephen Chin. Robert Wagner has also been added to the cast, which includes Antonio Banderas, Woody Harrelson and Lolita Davidovich in the story of two best friends, both former boxing title contenders, who travel to Las Vegas together to fight each other for the first time. Along the way they are accompanied by a woman who is the girlfriend of one and ex-girlfiend of the other.

Untitled: Writer-director Cameron Crowe has almost completed casting his untitled DreamWorks comedy, and leading his ensemble will be Kate Hudson playing a groupie and Billy Crudup the leader of a rock band. Frances McDormand is in talks to play the mother of a young journalist who goes on the road with the band. Jason Lee, Bijou Phillips, Anna Paquin, Noah Taylor and Fairuza Balk fill out the rest of the primary roles. Shooting is expected to begin in May. It's rumored to be a personal comedy about the world of '70s rock as seen through the eyes of a journalist observing a group and all the people who revolve around it, according to Variety.

Frisco Pigeon Mambo: Peter and Bobby Farrelly are making their first foray into feature animation by producing the black comedy "Frisco Pigeon Mambo.'' The Fox project follows the travails of three urban scavengers (a rat, a pigeon and a squirrel) who live in a New York City alcohol and tobacco research lab, where they live the high life, spending their days chain smoking, drinking sherry and hitting on attractive lab technicians. It's a good life until a group of pesky animal rights activists decides to spring them from their libertine lifestyle, setting them free into the cold, harsh city where they now have to fight for food, smokes and shelter. Cursing their bleeding-heart liberators, the trio sets out to find their way back to the lab.Former standup comics Peter Gaulke & Gerry Swallow will write the screenplay.

Editors Note: Sorry about the lack of updates this week, I took a short 'Easter break.' Everyone in the US seems to enjoy "The Matrix" these days, and you can read Johnathan Pritchett's thoughts on this film and many others right here.

March 29th 1999 - Movie News/Rumours

Nicole Kidman

Birthday Girl: Nicole Kidman is in final negotiations to play a Russian mail-order bride star in "Birthday Girl,'' which is on track to shoot at the end of May in Australia. Kidman's character is sent for by an unassuming young bank manager living in suburban St. Albans, just outside London. But he gets more than he bargained for when her entire family descends upon him. Jez Butterworth ("Mojo") will shoot from a script he co-wrote with his brother Tom. The project was set up by Britain's HAL Films, which is backed by Miramax, and FilmFour, Variety reports.

The Shrink Is In: Courtney Cox and David Arquette ("Scream 1 & 2") are set to star in independent film "The Shrink Is In" for director Richard Benjamin. Shooting begins April 19 in Los Angeles. The romantic comedy is the story of a woman (Cox) who assumes the identity of her psychiatrist and inadvertently falls in love with a patient (Arquette) who is also not who he appears to be, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Movie Trailers: A trailer for the Robert Downey Jr./Claudia Schiffer film "Friends & Lovers," also a trailer for the Adam Sandler flick "Big Daddy" and finally a teaser for the upcoming film "Stuart Little," which will feature voices from Michael J. Fox, Geena Davis and Jonathan Lipnicki.

Pitt/Streep Project: Got another anonymous scoop claiming that this project is in the works. Take it with a truckload of salt:

I've got unconfirmed rumor that Brad Pitt and Meryl Streep will make a movie about war in former Yugoslavia (i think it's about war in Bosnia). I know more but I can't say more because someone can loose his job...

Presence of Mind: Lauren Bacall and Harvey Keitel are toplining writer-director Antonio Alloy's debut feature, "Presence of Mind." Alloy and Barbara Gogny scripted the film, an adaptation of Henry James' classic ghost story "The Turn of the Screw" that begins shooting this week in Spain. A European production budgeted around $5 million, "Presence" also stars Sadie Frost ("Bram Stoker's Dracula"), Ella Jones ("Sliding Doors"), Dayna Danika ("Ballad of the Nightingale") and newcomer Nilo Mur.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas!: Molly Shannon ("Saturday Night Live") has landed the female lead alongside Jim Carrey in "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!'' Shannon will play Betty Lou Who, mother of the famed Cindy Lou Who, who is roused from her sleep by the Grinch as he tries to plunder Christmas from Whoville. Mrs. Who is not in the original Dr. Seuss book, but becomes a big presence in the feature. Ron Howard is scheduled to begin shooting the Universal film Aug. 9 from a script by Peter Seaman and Jeffrey Price, Variety reports.
