I Am Legend - It looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger has some free time on his hands. The Hollywood Reporter says Warner Bros. has officially scrapped his "I Am Legend'' just a few months after putting the sci-fi picture on hold due to budget concerns. The studio reportedly was pressuring director Ridley Scott to trim the film's $100 million budget by $20 million. Legend had been aiming for a summer start.

Phantom Of The Opera? - It seems like there are plans to make a new version of this classic musical for the Big Screen. John Travolta is rumoured to be involved in this project, but various places on the internet do not think this is a good idea. Big thanks to 'Nuts4Films' for the info!

Taxman - Billy Zane, currently onscreen in "Titanic," has segued from the biggest-budget pic in Hollywood history to a modest, low-budget Canuck film, "Taxman." Lensing recently kicked off in Montreal on the romantic comedy, which is being directed by Alain Zaloum ("Suspicious Minds").

The Mummy - Rachel Weisz ("Swept from the Sea") has been cast opposite Brendan Fraser in Stephen Somers' remake of the classic 1932 horror film "The Mummy" for Universal, sources said Thursday. Jim Jacks and Sean Daniel of Alphaville Prods. are producing "Mummy," a $70 million tale about an archaeological expedition.

March 12th 1998 - Movie News/Rumours

Child's Play 4 - Jennifer Tilly will act in, and also provide the voice of the evil mate of murderous doll Chucky, and Nick Stabile and Katherine Heigl have signed to star in the fourth installment of the "Child's Play" horror series, "Bride of Chucky." Brad Dourif, who has done the voice of Chucky in the three previous films, will reprise that role. The Universal Pictures film, which is expect to start shooting in April in Toronto, has Chucky hitting the road with Tiffany, a doll dressed in a wedding gown who possesses the spirit of a very bad girl. Ronny Yu is set to helm the picture.

The Mod Squad - Claire Danes has been set to star in "The Mod Squad," MGM's adaptation of the Aaron Spelling-created TV series. The series, which launched on ABC in 1968, featured Michael Cole, Clarence Williams III and Peggy Lipton as three juvenile delinquents recruited to be undercover operatives and bust villains preying on underage kids.

The Bad Boys Club - Paramount Pictures and producer Alan Ladd Jr. paid just under $1 million for screen rights and screenwriting fees to "First Wives Club" author Olivia Goldsmith's next novel, "The Bad Boys Club." The story focuses on a guy who is so nice to women that he can't seem to keep one. He sets out to change his luck under the tutelage of a group of male friends who teach him to be a heel to women so he won't be taken for granted.

Howard Hughes Biopic - Filmmaking brothers Allen and Albert Hughes are set to direct a biopic of Howard Hughes at Universal, with Johnny Depp attached to star as the once-dashing billionaire who eventually became a germophobic recluse. The Hughes brothers, said sources, have set Terry Hayes to adapt "Empire: The Life, Legend and Madness of Howard Hughes," written by Donald L. Barlett and James B. Steele.

Truth or Dare - Oscar-winner William Friedkin is attached to direct the William Davies-scripted thriller "Truth or Dare" for New Regency Prods. Davies, whose writing credits include "Twins" and "The Real McCoy," also will produce the film with New Regency. "Truth or Dare" is a remake of the BBC telefilm of the same title.

Halloween: H20 - Rap star LL Cool J has landed a role in the upcoming thriller "Halloween: H20," in which Jamie Lee Curtis reprises her role from the "Halloween" franchise. The seventh installment of the slasher series is set up at Miramax Films' Dimension banner, which is keeping the plot tightly under wraps. Also just signed is Jodi Lyn O'Keefe ("Nash Bridges"). She and LL Cool J join a TV-thesp-heavy cast comprising Adam Arkin ("Chicago Hope"), Michelle Williams ("Dawson's Creek") and Joseph Gordon Levitt ("3rd Rock From the Sun"). The film, which began shooting in Los Angeles on Feb. 18, is being directed by Steve Miner, who helmed two installments of the "Friday the 13th" franchise.

Stretch Armstrong - In a role that would stretch his acting chops to new lengths, Danny DeVito is in talks to star in "Stretch Armstrong," a Disney film based on the doll that can expand to twice its size. The long-in-development story is about a bumbling, warm-hearted scientist and father of two boys, whose life is altered when a potion intended to kill him instead makes his body more malleable than Gumby.

Box Office - "Titanic'' cruised into its 12th weekend at the top of the North American box office but narrowly avoided an iceberg in the form of newcomer "U.S. Marshals,'' according to studio estimates. Titanic earned about $18 million for the Friday-to-Sunday period, while U.S. Marshals opened in second with $17.1 million. "The Wedding Singer'' slipped to third after three weeks at second, with $6.2 million. Two new entries shared fourth with $6 million - "Hush'' and "Twilight.''

Archie - Universal is moving ahead with a screen version of "Archie," based on the 55-year-old comic book saga of students at Riverdale High. Filmmaker Tommy O'Haver, whose first feature, "Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss," screened at Sundance, has been signed to write and direct the film, with Ben Myron producing.

Cupid's Love - Actress Jennifer Love Hewitt has sold a wedding pitch to New Line Cinema, the studio riding high with the Adam Sandler romantic comedy "The Wedding Singer." Sources said Hewitt, the 19-year-old co-star of TV's "Party of Five," teamed up with Steve Cohen to sell "Cupid's Love" for an initial $500,000. The deal also gives the pair an undetermined share of profits if the project goes ahead. Cohen will write the script from Hewitt's original idea. Hewitt, who also starred in the hit film "I Know What You Did Last Summer," came up with the idea about a wedding planner who falls in love with the groom in one of her weddings.
