X-Men: StarTrek.com reports that Patrick Stewart reportedly has signed to appear as Professor Charles Xavier in the upcoming "X-Men" film. The film will be directed by Bryan Singer ("The Usual Suspects") and co-stars Ian McKellen ("Gods and Monsters") as Magneto. Filming will begin in Toronto mid-July. Stigmata: Loews Trailer Park has released a new trailer for this upcoming film about a young woman (Patricia Arquette), who becomes the focus of brutal assaults by an unseen attacker, the spiritual implications of the incidents drive a Vatican official (Jonathan Pryce) to send a priest to investigate. Upon witnessing her affliction firsthand, the priest (Gabriel Byrne) becomes more concerned with saving her life than debunking her claims.
City by the Sea: Al Pacino may be moving to the "City by the Sea." That's the name of a Warner Bros. drama that caught the actor's eye, about a real-life homicide cop whose father was a kidnapper and murderer. The movie idea originated with a nonfiction article written by Mike McAlary that appeared in Esquire magazine in 1997. In the film version, Pacino's character is eventually confronted by the fact that his own son may be involved in a murderous kidnapping plot. Ken Hickson and director Michael Caton-Jones already made a pass at the script. Now the writing job is on the open assignment list. Pacino is waiting for a rewrite. If he signs on, cameras will roll this fall with Caton-Jones ("Rob Roy") at the helm. The Golden Bowl: Kate Beckinsale is in negotiations to star in Merchant Ivorys $20 million The Golden Bowl, which was recently picked up for domestic distribution by Miramax at Cannes. The film will go before cameras this summer in England. Beckinsale is expected to join Uma Thurman, Nick Nolte and Anjelica Huston in the movie based on the Henry James 1904 novel of the same name. Directed by James Ivory, produced by Ismail Merchant and scripted by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, the story follows a wealthy American widower (Nolte) and his daughter (Beckinsale) who are living in Europe. Trouble ensues when the daughters husband is discovered having an affair. Bowl completes a threesome of James adaptations for Merchant, Ivory and Jhabvala, according to THR.
Star Wars: Episode I - TPM: Midnight showings of 20th Century Foxs Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace skywalked their way to a stunning $7 million-$10 million at the boxoffice, various industry sources estimated Wednesday. That puts it on track to a $35 million or better single-day gross, eclipsing the record set by Universals Lost World: Jurassic Park, which took in $26.1 million on a Sunday during the four-day 1997 Memorial Day holiday weekend. Phantom made its debut at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Assassination Tango: Robert Duvall's next directing assignment will be the thriller "Assassination Tango,'' a long-cherished attempt by the actor to bring one of his private obsessions, tango dancing, to the big screen. Duvall plans to direct the picture in New York and Buenos Aires next year. In "Tango,'' a hitman (Duvall) moves to Argentina after completing a job and becomes enthralled with tango dancing. Duvall said he hoped to evoke the "tango underworld'' in the picture. Shooting will begin in Scotland on July 25, according to Variety. Mystery Men: A teaser has been released at the slow-loading official site. Click below to check it out. Mission: Impossible 2: U.S. cinematographer Jeffrey Kimball ("Top Gun") has signed on to the Tom Cruise starrer "Mission: Impossible 2" following the departure of Australian director of photography Andrew Lesnie. Lesnie left the Sydney set late last week and could not be reached for comment, but a spokeswoman for the production cited "stylistic differences" with director John Woo. "It was all very amicable and no reflection whatsoever on Andrew. John has a certain way of shooting and a certain speed, and Andrew had his way, and happily they agreed to part company," she said. A Los Angeles-based spokesman for Paramount Pictures, which will release the film worldwide, also confirmed the change, according to THR. Waking Up in Reno: Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston will work together on-screen in Miramax's "Waking Up in Reno." A tentative fall start date is planned with director James Gray ("Little Odessa") at the helm. Negotiations are under way for Aniston and Pitt to come aboard the project, a character-driven comedy about two couples who take a vacation to Reno, Nev., from Arkansas. Ben Myron, Billy Bob Thornton and Dwight Yoakam are producing. Paul Feldsher recently came aboard for producing duties as well. Thornton's Arkansas buddies Brent Briscoe and Mark Fauser scripted the project, picked up on spec by Miramax about two years ago. The redneck comedy caught the interest of Pitt and Aniston about a month ago, and the couple agreed to go forward with it this week, THR reports.
