    - UPDATE ARCHIVE -

November 6th 2007: After some polite... and not-so-polite e-mails re: the WGA strike, I'll let a writer (James Gunn, "Dawn of the Dead") address it. As one message said, "your site is dedicated to these writers and their work..." This is very true, however the site is also more or less retired, hence the lack of support. Anyhoo:
"The only reason for the strike - and don't believe anything to the contrary - is that the studios have refused to pay writers (and screen actors, and directors) residuals on new media. When you download a movie from Amazon or a TV show on iTunes, the people who created that content, who devised it, wrote it, acted in it, and directed it, get exactly 0% of the profits. And the studios want it to stay that way.

The WGA was asking for an increase in the residuals made on DVD sales (unlike new media, creators make a small percentage off of DVD and VHS sales, pay-per-view showings, TV sales, etc). For months now the studios have said that this was the reason the contract couldn't be closed. However, at the 11th hour - last night - the WGA took that off the table. It came down to new media and only new media. And the studios refused to budge.

This strike is absolutely not a matter of the rich getting richer. We're not striking because of guys like me who have made numerous feature films, or guys like Greg Daniels who have created popular TV shows. This is for middle-class writers - your regular TV staff writers and people who may have done one or two small feature films. Residuals are a way they can make perhaps a few thousand dollars a year between gigs. This is a way they can put food on the table and pay the rent during downtime - and downtime is something almost all writers (and actors and directors) have."
More -->

May 13th 2006: An unspecified, undated -- save "1976" -- draft of "The Hills Have Eyes" by Wes Craven. It's titled "Blood Relations: The Sun Wars." I believe this is the complete script, despite the abrupt ending (will admit; never seen the film).

April 10th 2006: A second draft of "Gremlins," by Christopher Columbus. This script was, as most know, heavily rewritten.
Joe Dante: "[They] basically wanted to have a really nasty horror picture about little monsters that bite your ankles and do terrible things. They cut mom's head off and bounce it down the stairs, they eat the dog, it was pretty gruesome. And when we were making the movie, it just seemed that they were actually so funny--the puppets were so funny when they were doing human things, putting on clothes--that it took a whole different direction. It became much more of a horror-comedy than it was a straight horror picture." Thanks to HorrorLair.

March 29th 2006: Thanks to The Daily Script and 'Vern' for an unspecified draft of "The New World," written by Terrence Malick. This must be one of his first drafts, if not the first. Quite overly theatrical and dissimilar in tone to the final film. Here's some info on the "Malick scripting process" in general from Audrey:
"The 1970's screenplay was honed repeatedly into the version of the shooting script which was registered with the WGA in July 2004. Most of the live dialogue which had been shot has been cut (there now are nearly 20 times the original number of internal monologues). Literally dozens of scripted developmental incidents are not in the finished film. Brief answer [to the similarities between screenplay/film]: the script became a 'serving suggestion.'"

March 22nd 2006: The Director's Shooting Script of "Suspect Zero," written by Billy Ray and Zak Penn. Many thanks to 'J.B.M.," who has a few comments on the script:
"This is, to my knowledge, the shooting draft reviewed by AICN a few years back. While I don't agree it's the "abomination" Moriarty made it out to be, it has some very rough patches. All the interesting aspects of this draft are from Zak Penn and director E. Elias Merhige -- Billy Ray brought nothing but overwriting and pretension. If the studio had gone back to one of Zak Penn's drafts -- or maybe even the Paul Schrader draft leaked online -- the film might have gotten a little more attention."

March 19th 2006: Originally this screenplay was "set" to be released online about 5 years ago, luckily it has held back for various reasons, most of which I forget now. Anyways; with thanks to my old pal 'Anonymous' -- an early draft of "V for Vendetta," by Larry and Andy Wachowski. The $50 mill film took the #1 spot at the Box Office this weekend, earning approx. $26 million.

February 13th 2006: M. Night Shyamalan's infamous, early draft of "The Village." I usually do not directly address screenwriters here, this will be one of the exceptions:    Well, Mr. Shyamalan... now it's out there, a 'proof' of how needless it was calling people liars or denying the obvious. You're a tremendously gifted writer, and I'd advise you to read this again; it's a well-observed piece. "After SIXTH SENSE exploded at the box office, he signed a deal with Disney that gives him a fairly unprecedented level of freedom. He got burned early on with his experiences working on LABOR OF LOVE over at Fox, and as a result, he has managed to form a protective wall around himself to prevent anyone from giving him notes or suggesting revisions. He’s insulated himself from other people’s decisions, and as much as that sounds like exactly what every writer/director wants or needs, it can be a trap, and just as destructive as being involved in filmmaking by committee. There’s a balance to it, as with everything, that must be struck, and the more insulated you are, the more you become vulnerable to your own worst instincts..." Thanks to HorrorLair.

February 9th 2006: An early, February 1st, 2003 draft of the much-requested "Brokeback Mountain," written by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana. Thanks to The Daily Script.

January 19th 2006: Hey now! J.F. Lawton's unproduced screenplay for "The Adventures of Fartman," the film "...Howard [Stern] was supposed to make before he made "Private Parts." Things didn't work out so Howard and J.F. pulled out of the deal and the script has been sitting dormant ever since." Thanks to MarksFriggin.com.   In other news: Looks like Cameron's "Avatar" will finally be made. So for those who still have it on their script sites, now might be a good time to remove it...for a while.

October 15th 2005: An undated shooting script for "Fantastic Four," by Mark Frost and Michael France. Thanks to 'J.B.M.' - who mentions the following about this draft:

"P.S. Although only Frost and France are the only writers credited here, I am 200% sure Simon Kinberg was the final writer on this draft. His "trademarks" are all over it...the horrible dialogue, cliched interactions between characters, boring and weak action, etc. Y'know, Akiva Goldsman was this guy's mentor -- Kinberg learned the dark arts from the Devil himself.:D

August 12th 2005: "Secret Window" by David Koepp, Feb. 12th 2003 revised draft. Thanks to 'J.B.M.'

August 3rd 2005: An unspecified draft of Eric Red's [cult] classic "The Hitcher." Thanks to 'johnryder.'

August 1st 2005: "Land of the Dead" - an August 24th, 2004 draft by George A. Romero. Many thanks to 'J.B.M.' for sending it this way!

June 25th 2005: The seventh draft of the "Butt ugly. But funny" comedy "Freaked," penned by Tim Burns, Tom Stern, and Alex Winter.

June 23rd 2005: A script for the animated cult classic "Rock & Rule," written by Peter Sauder and John Halfpenny.

June 17th 2005: An early draft of "Hostage," penned by the author of the novel, Robert Crais. Thanks to 'J.B.M.' And now for a quick plug -- check out my new Movie Board; 20 secs to sign up, and you can discuss DVDs, books, music, TV, in addition to, of course, scripts and film.

June 16th 2005: A shooting script for Paul W.S. Anderson's "Event Horizon," credited solely to Philip Eisner. Hmm...could have sworn it was given a rewrite by Andrew Kevin Walker (whatever happened to that guy?). Thanks to Dennis over at The Weekly Script.

June 14th 2005: David Goyer's "Blade: Trinity," unknown draft. Thanks to good ol' Nazardo.

June 10th 2005: A shooting draft for Charlie Kaufman's "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," dated February 4th, 2003. Many thanks to Mick over at Being Charlie Kaufman.

June 7th 2005: A revised fourth draft of "The Goonies," by Chris Columbus. Thanks to Simply Scripts and TheGoonies.com.

May 12th 2005: Speaking of mangled, an early draft of Hillary Seitz's script for the limp "Insomnia" remake is available over at The Daily Script. I believe Christopher Nolan gave the script a final production polish. "To me, the original movie is brilliant and I think it's perfectly realized. I don't think there's any ... it's unimprovable and it's complete." Right.

April 31st 2005: Paul Schrader's revision of Zak Penn's famously mangled "Suspect Zero" screenplay. Thanks to The Weekly Script.

April 27th 2005: A year later...the site returns with the script for... Neil Tolkin's "License to Drive." What can I say; it's a nostalgia flick.

May 21st 2004: No, this section isn't dead just yet, as much as it may seem like it. Will be adding an extensive backlog of scripts over the next few days, starting with Sofia Coppola's "Lost in Translation" courtesy of The Daily Script.

February 19th 2004: "The Life of David Gale" -- first draft by Charles Randolph. Many thanks to 'Green Wasabi.'

February 3rd 2004: Added a handful of scripts that have surfaced over the past few weeks ("Groundhog Day," "Office Space," "Any Given Sunday," "Donnie Brasco," "Cold Mountain"), with thanks to All Movie Scripts dot Com and Simply Scripts. All the feedback regarding the "WB situation" is also much appreciated. Most messages go something like this.

January 8th 2004: With thanks to 'Anon' - a correctly formatted text version of the first draft for "Pirates of the Caribbean." Read some comments about this draft here.

December 2nd 2003: The A-M page is back, N-Z will follow shortly. A brief explanation of what happened: A while back, completely out of the blue, I received a "Cease & Desist" letter from Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., insisting that 100+ scripts should be removed from the site. "2001," "Casablanca," "Citizen Kane," "Badlands," "Lethal Weapon," "A Clockwork Orange," "Seven," "Unforgiven," "The Green Mile," etc., etc. -- all gone.
So there you have it...but despite this 'incident,' the now-mangled script section will still live on.   Oh, and WB, assuming you'll have similar problems with the site in the future, feel free to contact me directly, there's really no need to do this via a certain patent office.

November 18th 2003: Script section is temporarily closed... Meanwhile, have a look at an early draft of "The Italian Job," written by 'The Powers' - Wayne and Donna Powers. Thanks to All Movie Scripts dot Com.

August 4th 2003: "Collateral Damage" - written by Ronald Roose, Nicholas Meyer, David Griffiths & Peter Griffiths, Terry George, and Channing Gibson. Thanks to 'Green Wasabi.'

August 3rd 2003: John Logan's script for "The Last Samurai" (undated, although with revisions by Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick, it could be quite recent) has popped up over at Script-Fix. I expect it to be gone within a couple of days...

July 31st 2003: The Academy Award winning screenplay for "The Cider House Rules," by John Irving. Also an early draft - possibly the original spec - of Shane Black's endlessly-quotable "Last Boy Scout." Thanks to The Weekly Script and 'Green Wasabi.'

July 7th 2003: A later draft of "Training Day," dated April 2001. Thanks to 'Green Wasabi,' who mentions that "...even though David Ayer's name is the only one on the cover, I do know there are at least two other writers with uncredited polishes on this draft."

June 13th 2003: An early - possibly spec - draft of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" by Joss Whedon. Many thanks to 'Alex Moskwa,' who adds that this is a chance for "Buffy" fans to "...bask in its literary glory and see in their heads what we should have been able to see up on screen."

June 10th 2003: "Angel Eyes," seventh draft by Gerald DiPego, dated October 1999. Thanks to 'Green Wasabi.'

June 7th 2003: A script for "Space Cowboys," penned by Ken Kaufman and Howard Klausner. Next, there's Colin Higgins' "Harold and Maude," May 1970 draft. Thanks to 'Green Wasabi' and 'Anon.'

Thanks to 'Sue from Waterloo.'

March 26th 2003: A February 1992 draft of "The Fugitive," by David Twohy. Thanks to 'Ares from NYU':

"This story is based in Philadelphia, instead of Chicago, and it ends in a Pennsylvania coal mine instead of a Chicago hotel. It must be one of David N Twohy's first few drafts before the major studio rewrites. It's very interesting to see the changes made to get to the final shooting draft."

March 23rd 2003: With thanks to 'Green Wasabi,' three "good scripts that got [colorful metaphor] during production and fell flat at the box office ... scripts that read well but bombed as movies" -- "Bonfire of the Vanities" (production draft by Tom Wolfe), "Hudson Hawk" (by Steven E. de Souza and Dan Waters), and "The Hudsucker Proxy" (by Joel & Ethan Coen and Sam Raimi).

March 22nd 2003: David Goyer's revised draft of Richard Outten's "Pet Sematary II." Thanks to Marc:

"This draft of "Pet Sematary II," by "Blade" scribe David S. Goyer, is significantly different from Richard Outten's superior original screenplay in several notable ways. Stylistically, Outten's draft is far more understated and thoughtful, content to pierce the heart with a stiletto, where as Goyer's draft is total bombast geared to smash the reader over the head with a 12-pound sledgehammer. The beginning of this draft is completely different from the original script, and it is unfortunate that the changes did not stop there. That said, this is still an interesting read. Goyer is in fine form here, and while far from "high art," this script has an undeniable "cool" factor to it, especially for those who like their horror scripts bloody."

March 21st 2003: "The Replacements" - a second draft for this Keanu Reeves/Gene Hackman flick from a few years back, penned by Vince McKewin. Thanks to 'AVJ.'

Night Shyamalan), "River Road" (by Andrew Niccol), the ill-fated "Sprockets" (by Mike Myers, Jack Handy & Michael McCullers), "The German Lieutenant" (by Stanley Kubrick & Richard Adams), "The Six Million Dollar Man" (by Kevin Smith), and "With Wings as Eagles" (by Randall Wallace). A million thanks to 'Anonymous'!   The scripts can be found at this location.

December 3rd 2002: The highly-requested screenplay for "Signs," by M. Night Shyamalan. Thanks again, 'Anonymous'!

December 1st 2002: "Solaris" arrived at the seventh place on this weekend's Box Office chart. Ouch. Do go see it, folks!   Steven Soderbergh has said he did "draft after draft after draft of the script," and with thanks to 'Anonymous,' here is one of them. On a personal note; here's hoping Soderbergh goes through with his plans to release the "longer, colder, more abstract" early version of the film on DVD.

November 25th 2002: Included the script "If I Had a Hammer," the most recent film from writer-director Josh Becker ("Running Time"). It's available for purchase at his web site.

October 20th 2002: A draft of "The Time Machine," by John Logan (dated February 22nd, 2000). Grazie; 'Anonymous'!

October 15th 2002: A script for "Pet Sematary," written by Stephen King. Many thanks to Marc:

"This is the first draft, dated 1986, and it deviates from both King's novel and the finished film in many little ways, most notably the fact that in the script, Jud Crandall's character is an octogenarian "headbanger." (!) George Romero was slated to direct the film at the time when this draft was written, and King's stage-directions reference this at one point with the phrase "George will know what to do." Sadly, the next-to-last page is missing from my hard-copy, but the omission does little to hamper the script."

"...very different to the draft by Robert Nelson Jacobs which the movie was ultimately based on [...] this adaptation is entertaining and colourful [...] not perfect -- Bass takes a lot of short cuts, there are too many disconnected scenes and jumps in time (like the first act of WHAT DREAMS MAY COME), and Quoyle's two young daughters (in the novel) are combined into one (rather inconsistent) character."

As always, a huge thanks goes out to Marc:

"William Goldman's screenwriting style is highly unconventional; he has been quoted as saying that he detests the "standard" format and doesn't use it. When typing this script, I did not deviate from the hard copy that I had, and the resulting soft copy is rather "offbeat." To those readers who may think that the script looks the way it does because I didn't know any better, I assert that I did. Don't blame me, blame William Goldman."

August 4th 2001: The shooting draft of "Jacob's Ladder," by "Ghost" author Bruce Joel Rubin. Many thanks to Marc!

"...shot numbers have been omitted for this soft copy. "It is important that you know that I had very little to do with digitizing, and putting this first draft together.
After I acquired this draft, I quickly discovered that it isn't that different from the final draft, which was digitized by Jane and is hosted at the following address: suspensionofdisbelief.com

So, using that as a starting point, I reformatted, then went through it sentence by sentence, and changed anything that was different. I would say that about 5% is different in this draft from the final draft, and is mostly in the beginning and the ending, which revolves around a "Parole Officer" character being involved. There are slight changes here and there, in various scenes, and also a last name change for Gino and Johnnie, plus some capitalization and punctuations changes. But all very minor."
