One
of the most powerful and unforgettable films I have ever
seen, American History X is not everyone's cup of tea,
but it should be seen by everyone. It has a strong
message and strong themes running through the narrative.
The story involves Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton), who is
a racist Neo-Nazi skinhead and what happens when he is
released from prison after three years for killing two
men who were stealing his truck.
Derek has been reformed on the inside, and fears that his
younger brother Danny (Edward Furlong) may be travelling
down the same path. The story's set up is nothing special
really, and this film could have been a superficial
examination of the subject, however it is the
intelligence of the writing, direction and most of all,
Edward Norton's amazing performance that helps lift this
film to great heights. His portrayal of the Neo-Nazi is
terrifying, but also multi-dimensional and realistic, he
is both the hero and villain of the film. Other
performances are great too, especially Edward Furlong and
Beverly D'Angelo as their mother.
The story's use of many flashbacks (shown in black and
white) are rivetting and help contrast the past with the
present, and explain why Derek changed while in prison.
The only real mystery about this film is why Edward
Norton was not honoured with an Oscar for his
performance, it is acting at its finest.
