TOMB
RAIDER's PlayStation success was so widespread, 5 sequels
were produced on 6 different gaming platforms. Lara was
even killed in TOMB RAIDER: THE LAST REVELATION, yet
another sequel was made and the hype from the movie
caused Sony to confirm that another 'TOMB RAIDER' game is
on the way. If that doesn't top it off, Lara has been
popularly produced on posters, clothing, and commercials
since her debut. The movie, LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER, that
was destined to be made has alot pushing against its
ability to be worthy of Lara's reputation.
Lara Croft (Angelina Jolie) , the rich adventurous
heiress to Lord Richard Croft's (Jolie's real-life-daddy,
John Voight) uncovers a clock that is counting down to
the solar aligning of the planets that will cause a total
eclipse that only occurs every 5,000 years. A legendary
artifact that was split in two halves because of it's
abilities centuries ago can be united once again, and he/she
that does so will be granted the power of light and time.
Of course, a greedy bunch of aristocrats have joined to
form a society dedicated to making sure this happens and
that their leader is the one that reunites the broken
artifact to achieve their own twisted purposes.
In many ways, LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER, is uncannily
similar to this summer's previous action adventure, THE
MUMMY RETURNS, with human and supernatural enemies,
legendary prophecies, and powerful ancient relics. 'TOMB
RAIDER', unfortunately, throws in a, somewhat, spiritual
element, which is Lara receiving ominous omens from her
late father. Voices from the dead only work in religious
or spiritual movies and comedies, a far cry from 'TOMB
RAIDER'.
Like deceased daddy's visits, there's a few more events
that are way too coincidental. Are we suppose to root for
Lara Croft for saving the day or the filmmakers that
didn't want the bad guys to win in the end?
Besides story and critical acclaim, the biggest feat was
casting someone to be THE Lara Croft. The Tomb Raider is
miraculously played by Angelina Jolie. I honestly don't
think anyone could have given the wonderful performance
Jolie gave. Jolie even looks like the computer animated
version of Lara.
'TOMB RAIDER' is an enjoyable movie despite its few cons.
Every scene is intense with dozens of fights and
spectacular special effects. To date (the title is being
passed quite frequently these days), 'TOMB RAIDER'
definitely holds the title of best fight scenes. Not only
do the actors execute their moves well, they're also done
with good music and much intensity. Perhaps this was used
to veer audiences from caring about the plot. If so, they
did a good job of brainwashing me.
