I
just got back from a test screening of The Blair Witch
Project. One word, WOW! While it wasn't the scariest move
I have seen, it is definitely right up there. This is one
of the rare movies that builds believable and fearful
suspense. With an ending I will not soon forget. But is
there anything that's bad about it? One, the majority of
the movie is shot with a professional cam corder, to
create the documentary feel. It wasn't a story within a
story, the film if the "actual" footage found
of a documentary. But that's not really a bad thing,
because it makes it that much more believable. Two, I
don't remember seeing one shot of the witch. But this is
just one of the elements that build the suspense.

THE
REST OF THE REVIEW CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS
The film opens with the introduction "In 1994 four
student film makers disappeared in the woods near
Burkistville, Maryland while shooting a documentary. A
year later their footage is found. Three film students
goofing around while getting ready to set out to shoot a
documentary on the Blair Witch. They arrive at the town
outside of the woods which the Blair Witch supposedly
"haunts" and begin interviewing the
townspeople.. some don't have a clue of what they are
talking about, some tell the legends, (like seven men
being found bound together on a rock, and how two
children would be led into a room and one would be forced
to stand in the corner facing the wall, while the other
was killed) and one describes an encounter with the
witch. They make their way to the woods and leave their
car parked on the side of the road. They arrive at what
appears to be a burial ground with seven piles of rocks.
They film it and move on. Then on the second night they
hear strange noise from all around their tent, but see
nothing. The second night they hear the same noise again
and in the morning they find three piles of rocks outside
their tent. During the next night one of them disappears.
And in the final scene the two go looking for their
friend following the calls (of what seems to be his
voice) from am old house, they don't find their friend,
but they find something else.
