Urban Legend

Review By Bruno on September 21st 1998.

This review contains Major Spoilers.

I had the privilege to see a test screening of the new entry in the overloaded world of the slasher film genre, "Urban Legend." The film was average with stiff acting. Alicia Witt is not ready to carry a film like this. It isn't the gril in Peril Material. She is cold and you don't sympathize with her character cause she killed someone before the film. There is hardly any suspense but the death scenes are creative and frequent. This film has a high body count. Joshua Jackson provided comic relief but alas was offed early on in the film. Jared Leto was stiffer then Freddie Prinze Jr. in "I Know What You Did Last Summer." He looked lost, maybe he was looking for Angela Chase. The best acting was done by Rebecca Gayheart, when you see the film you'll know why. The movie had many holes in the plot. Why was it always raining? Why is there only one security guard on duty even after people die? There were two very memorable death scenes. Danielle Harris' playing the Goth girl, death was good. And Sashas' death was reminiscent of Sarah Michelle Gellar's death in "IKWYDLS." The ending where the killer was revealed was shocking but corny and leaves you pondering how could this person have done what they did with no help. The way the killer was dispatched was weak and leaves room for a sequel. Lets hope they make greater uses of direction, the actors, and of course Urban Legends. Overall this movie is average and it's something to whet the appetite of the horror fan until something better is released. :)

Knock Off

Review By Leif on August 30th 1998.

Van Damme's latest movie Knock Off is out on video in Sweden! And it's a great watch. Far better than Maximum Risk and Double Team. This time Tsui Hark really gets to show off his great actionwork. It's lots of it and it's great. Quite some Jackie Chan fighting ripp-offs thou. And Rob Scheider delivers the comics and is enjoyable. He's a great sidekick. Steven E. De Souza has written the script but the story could easily have been written by the ordinary Hong-Kong action movie writers. But he's good at writing fastpaced dialogue, thou sometimes it gets a little too much cool-talk.

To sum it up: Action 5 of 5
The rest of it: 2 of 5
