The Best And Worst Of '97

Last year was not a spectacular year in films but it was noticeable for being a year of pure entertainment. It was a year of lavish epics (Amistad, Titanic, Wings Of The Dove), comedian comedy's (Liar Liar, Austin Powers, Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion), Blockbusters (MiB, Starship Troopers, Lost World), Disappointing sequels (Batman 4, Speed 2, Alien 4), Visions of the future (5th Element, Gattaca, Event Horizon), Thought provoking films (Contact, As Good As It Gets, Good Will Hunting), Monster movies (Anaconda, Mimic,) and Slasher films (Scream 2, I Know What You Did Last Summer). Few were great, many were good, and alot were bad. Here I pick my Top 10 best films and, for fun, my 5 Worst films of the year:

10. Private Parts - I hate Howard Stern! Even after this movie I think he's a self absorbed, rude, crude prick. But this movie is sooo funny I had to put it on the list. So here ya go Howard! I hope your Happy! You're not funny, but your movie is!

9. Scream 2 - Funny sequel to the smash original is even more clever. It's entertainment at it's most entertaining. It's fun and cool and a real crowd-pleasure.

8. Event Horizon - One of the scariest movies I've ever seen, this Sci-Fi/Horror makes your skin crawl. It's Horrific while still being a fun time at the show that'll scare ya, but won't leave any lasting damage (like Psycho). Good acting, great effects and lotsa blood!

7. Anastasia + Hercules - Two of the year's best movies are some of the best cartoons ever. Anastasia is a beautiful and smart movie with beautiful animation and great songs. Hercules is more offbeat and humorous, with it's edgy style and fast wit.

6. As Good As It Gets - A smart and funny picture about stuff. It's about three people as they try to deal with stuff like love and friends and stuff. Well, actually it's about Jack. It's all about Jack! Isn't Jack great! Helen and Greg are good too! Jack is the king!

5. Face/Off - An amazing action filled with stunts and style. But more than that, it has heart. A rare thing in action films these days. Way to Go Woo!

4. Waiting For Guffman -A movie you've probably never heard of. Go rent it! Its a Mockumentary about a small town theater group. Really funny and charming! Go rent it!

3. Austin Powers - The year funniest film is bright and flashy. A supremely scrumptious sixties spy spoof, Austin Powers is a masterpiece of comedy written by Mike Myers, one of today's funniest comedians.

2. The Fifth Element - A marvelous Sci-Fi film with great sets and costumes and a beautiful story to boot! An experience is what this marvel must be called. Not a movie- An Experience!

1. Titanic - Soon to be the highest grossing movie ever, Titanic is a masterpiece in every way. A beautiful and startling movie that will make you believe your on the fateful ship! You've already seen it but SEE IT AGAIN! It's the best film of the year, for good reason!

Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion, MIB, Cat's Dont Dance, Jackie Chan's First Strike, Spawn (Could have been waaay better but I still liked it), Home Alone 3 (seriously), Liar Liar, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Starship Troopers, George Of The Jungle, Air Force One, Contact and Money Talks.

Mimic, Amistad, The Lost World (didn't hold up the second time), Con Air, Spawn, Wings Of The Dove.

5. Speed 2: Cruise Control - Snooze Control is more like it. How much boring action can someone take. This film should be drowned!

3. The Postman - Booooring! Dances with the VCR fast forward button is what Costner should have called this crap. Or Snooze Fest '97.

Flubber, Mortal Kombat 2 - Annihilation, That Darn Cat, The Saint, The Pest, Wishmaster, Fathers Day, Alien: Resurrection and much much more!

Well there it is! A complete list. I hope '98 is a better year with smarter movies as well as some big dumb fun movies (and some bombs to make fun of). See ya in the future!
