One of the wildest rides I have been through in a theater. The thing is, it is hard to keep up with the pace. It is extremely fast, then it slows its pace for twenty minutes, then picks up again. That is the strength of the movie. It keeps you off balance through its timing, not its storytelling (although that is a gem in itself). With this being the Ten Thirteen Production's first shot at film, I was extremely impressed. The X-Files: Fight the Future, is the second best movie of the summer thus far, and there are very few movies that seem capable of being better. (The best being Jim Carrey's THE TRUMAN SHOW).

Performances:
Direction *** (3 stars)
Duchovny *** (3 stars)
Andersen **1/2 (2 and a half stars)
Landau ***1/2 (3 and a half stars)
Screenplay *** (3 stars)

First off, I'm tired of everyone from television to newspapers to the internet, referring to the X-Files feature film as "X-Files: Fight the Future". No where did it say "Fight the Future" in either time when the title was shown onscreen. It was a tagline. Similar to the "Nice planet. We'll take it." from "Mars Attacks". Therefore, it had nothing to do with the movie. However, on to the movie. Many other reviewers have criticized it for being too similar to a "feature length episode". News flash folks. That's what made it work. It needed to be every-thing the television show is and then some in order to work. Granted, it didn't do much in the "and then some" department, but this was Chris Carter and company's first attempt at a feature film. There's bound to be some bugs. And to all though nay-sayers who say it made it confusing for people who don't watch the show? Tough. The show has been on for five years. It would have been suicidal to just throw out all that five years and put a bunch of fluff in a film that didn't pay homage to the show that spawned it. Besides, how many people do you actually think will go see the movie who haven't heard of the show (see, they've been living in that same cave where that boy fell for the past five years), let alone seen it? I'm thinking not too many. As I always say when a new movie comes out, "If you don't want to see it, shut up and don't worry about it." Maybe everyone who like to blast televisions-based movies will heed my words next time.

What can be said of a movie that tried so hard to please so many, on one hand it had to please the craving's of the faithful X fan's and on the other it had to be simple enough to please the average movie-goer who has no idea of what the show is about, unfortunately for the fan's, the average movie-goer won. This movie could have been so much, instead it became the a big-budget, 70 mil., episode that didn't answer any question's put forth by the show or any of the question's put forth by the movie it's self. David and Gillian were at there best playing FBI agent's Mulder and Scully but it was just not enough to satisfy the hunger that X fan's were waiting for, the movie doesn't pick up directly on the season finale except that the X-file's are now closed, frankly this show's all the loyal and faithful fan's of the X-file's that for Chris Carter the all mighty dollar has bitten him in the ass and infected him with it's evil and hated black oil that has corrupted so many talented and imaginative writer's and story teller's (ex. Mr. George Lucas of course).

Sci-Fi Asylum - Please visit, it's not much but hey it's decent.

Being a long time fan of the series I had high expectations for the first feature film in the series. I am happy to report I was not disappointed. Most of the criticism I have heard and read is that the film is not epic or "big" enough. Personally I didn't want to see a "big" movie, just a really well done episode that could take advantage of a bigger budget and have a "no rules" mentality. This movie plays like an episode of the series with the voltage cranked up. Everything is louder, faster, bigger, and bloodier. But it remembers it IS an X-Files story and doesn't betray that. The film is smart and most of it relies upon Mulder and Scully investigating mysterious hints left by an informant, slowly coming closer and closer to the "truth". It is genuinely scary, tense, and an altogether enjoyable movie. It's probably pretty tough to follow if you have not been watching the series. When Assistant Director Skinner is on screen, the fans instantly know who he is and that he can be trusted. For the "newbies" he probably seems like a completely useless and poorly drawn character who only seems to pop in randomly to give Mulder and Scully stern encouragement. I see now why Krycek and Marita Covarubius were left out of the feature since spending screen time trying to explain all the previous double crosses and dealings that the two have participated in would completely alienate fans, and confuse the hell out of non fans. The movie works as a straight ahead suspense thriller that should appeal to fans and non-fans alike. But make no mistake, fans will enjoy this movie A LOT more then non fans.

Just saw the X-File movie on opening night. One word to describe it: AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! I loved the part when Scully and Mulder were in the greenhouse? and the bees came flying out. That scared the crap out of me!!!!! All of the characters were well done except for Cigarette Smoking man who was kind of lame. Hope we see this turn into a Star Trek kind of film series. 9 out of 10 in my book.

Review By Joel Holtzman.

Well, it is quite simple. Let me be as spoiler free as possible.

First a basic generalization of the story. Both Moulder and Scully are taken off the X-files and are sent to uncover a bomb threat in Texas. However, they are simply in the middle of an undercover conspiracy to reval the (yes, you guessed it) "truth".

Basically, the basics of truth is discovered, and Moulder finds a key player who leads him to this truth, which will actually save both Scully and the X-files... along with the world of course. And yes, you guessed it, it leaves other questions for the next two seasons(maybe more) of the show.

STORY:(Non Spoiler) The story is a bit more refreshing than the original series becuase it is more detailed in the actual conflict of what the "truth" is, while showing us more characters that are involved in concealing it, revealing it, and why they must do so.

The story does move along at the right pace, and even though some elements might be predictable, what leads to the ending of the film certainly are not. Only problem is, this is not a story that could stand alone without a preceeding 5 year t.v.series. This is something you must understand ahead of time.

There is no real development among the characters and (spoiler ahead next sentence) that is a problem. You see, there are characters that sacrifice themselves for the truth, and even die to keep the truth a secret. (Last spoiler in next paragraph.)

Spoiler warning for the next paragraph only:

However, when Moulder and Scully finally discover the "truth", an alien virus that cannot be vaccinated, well, until one character helps Moulder find it, there is no progress or suspense. Only when it is used to help Scully at the end...(End of spoilers)

A story needs character development, and learning experience from conflict, and the two main characters do not offer that at all. Rather, it is a more sophisticated version of the show;however, the same problem is the lack of resolution, and many unanswered questions.

The acting: Great supporting cast and a few fan fovorites from the show. However, Moulder and Scully show no real urgency to reveal the truth. To resolve a fate that led them to work together for five years. It felt like the charactes were written as if they knew they had to film a six and seventh t.v.series after the movie.

The Writing: Can't complain, it was sharp and to the point, yet not doing a great job of forshadowing and leaving you on the edge of your seat. Remember, as fans of the show, you know the show continues from the movie, so how much suspense can there possibly be? Not much at all.

Granted, there is humor when it is needed, and some surprises during the beginning and end...especially the ending.

Overall opinion. If you love the show, you will enjoy a more refreshing story that does lead you to the basic understanding of the truth. However, do not expect to see a great film. Take it for what it is, and enjoy it for what it is. A tie in for the next seasons. A t.v. show that offers a bit more conflict on the big screen. Nothing more, nothing less.

Is this a great movie. No, of course not. Is it worth your $8 if you like the show, or enjoy sci-fi and conspiricy movies? Yes, you will have a good time. Just don't expect too much. This is no Contact or Close Encounters, that's all.

In short, I give the movie 2.5 stars out of 4 because it was very entertaining. However it lacked the character growth, originality, forshadowing, and suspense that I need to see in most movies. Especially movies that are science fiction.

Review By Marlin May.

Perhaps my greatest fear on walking into "X-Files: Fight the Future" was that the producers would answer too many questions. Not to fear, though. For every question they answered (maybe), they asked five more. Fans of the show will find lots of familiar Mulder / Scully moments and take-offs on "flashlight" shots, even as the movie is covering (some) new ground. Folks who are new to the show will find themselves asking, "Who the heck are these people?" more than is usual for a film. All in all, as an X-Files episode, it works. As a movie, a more energy could have been spent on character development, both to give the newbies something to latch on to, and to give us veterans more grist for our Monday morning discussions 'round the coffee machine.
